Rather than stick with general article distribution sites, you may try to track down some industry-specific news / blog sites that might let you submit an article to them. This will keep them relevant to your target market as well as provide more relevant back link traffic to your employer's site.

I have been using [automated software] for article submission for over a year. We have probably done over 5,000 submissions for clients. The software partially automates the submission process by filling in the article and your bio box and all that. You still have to select the category. I have only had one site reject the articles because they were submitted by software. And they show up in the links on Google.
Here are a couple of the top sites for articles submission:

Doesnt the article have to be different to avoid penalization though. Don't want to hamper my clients chances, by getting them banned for duplicate content

You should do a different shorter version for the article and add a for more information on "topic" link... this way you have two pages that can get ranked and are pushing you

I have been thinking about and doing some of the massive submit to articles directory, but am worried that this is going to get my site zapped for dup content.
I use the content on my site first with pictures and age it a few days and then submit it out for anyone to use. I am wondering if the search engines Can and do look at this that way or is it wishful thinking on my part?
Does the orginal writer sometimes get zapped this way?

As often happens, the best answer is: It depends.
If you have a fairly strong site and if the content were first spidered and indexed on that site then the SEs would probably see that site as the originator.
The best solution for any of this though is quite simple. Keep all site content unique, don't publish any of it as an article, use different versions for article submissions.

I have been doing article submission pretty extensively for over a year. I have not seen my sites get zapped or penalized. The only thing is that you get a surge of links shortly after doing the submissions and then the links fall off after a while if you don't continue submitting.

all i can say is that when submitting articles its not just getting for traffic on your site also by sharing news to other people.

Anyone heard of Article Leverage? It charges USD 37 a month and automates the who article submission proccess as well as comes up with different versions of an article too. Sounds really good and was wondering if anyone here has subscribed to it previously. Let me know.

i am using article submitter, it submits the same article but different bio boxes. Is this considered duplicate content or is the different bio boxes going to be okay?

I you are syndicating content, it's a good idea to make the version you host a unique and expanded version. It is also a good idea to link back to your site from the syndicated version.

so basically submit different versions of the same article. I guess there is no real effective way to automize the process, only the registration and login process :)
I guess this is why seo's get paid so much, so shouldnt complain

It seems to me over the years that G is looking for ways that tilt the system and automated articles would seem to me to fall into that category.
My reasoning is this, if they will only list two or three of a particular item in the organic results, all the rest of the same content would be supplemental, and if you were "flooding the net with Supplemental" it would be seen to not provide value except to boost your rankings so would be considered spam.
I am forced to think that if Matt C was questioning you in a dark room with a bright light shinning on you would your reasons for doing all that submitting cause him to feed you to his cat? (PS I love my cat and feed her fresh fish, milk and Friskies everyday between her naps)
For me I am going to submit to 3 main article directories and then this will give all the people that are looking for content access to it and hopefully not be seen as a link scheme by G.
I am also going to age the articles on my site first, alter the article a little so that my copy is unique, include pictures, and link to the content from some where else to show that I am the original writer.

Very interesting. I like the idea of aging the articles. That sounds a great way. Also just submitting to three or four sites really sounds good.
Thank you Chuck Miser

Just be sure to keep in mind that the age of an article is one very, very small factor that can be trumped by others. How about a real-life example?
Some months ago an SEW member started a new thread by copying and pasting an older article from his blog. Within 20 minutes -- 20 minutes -- when you searched for snippets of text from the article the SEW thread popped up in the first position.
Again, best practice is simple: Keep unique content on your site; write separate and unique articles for submission.

submitting the same article to a few places is okay but fuller article, aged a little, will help overall... plus building the site's authority level if the articles are from relevant sites more than numer of sites
