I am seeking to understand if search engines treats subdomains as a complete website or as a page of the main domain name. I have a website http://portalshops.com and users get web portals using subdomains eg http://greg.portalshops.com . Would each subdomain be seen a a link of the main domain name or as an independent website linking to portalshops.com? Does subdomains increase ranking in terms of sites linking back to the main domain? Please contribute

Subdomains, in my experience and knowledge, are generally treated as independent of the main domain. As far as search engines are concerned, these are different sites.

As for the linking credit question, link analysis with the major search engines is done on a page by page basis. So someone links to portalshops.com, that counts as a link to the portalshops.com home page. A link to portalshops.com/insidepage.html? That's a link to that page -- and the home page gets no benefit to it.

Similarly, links to any particular pages in any subdomains will be counted as links only to those pages. The entire domain doesn't some how get a credit.

Danny pretty much covered everything I would say... but I will add - subdomains do little for you rank-wise unless they are independently large repositories of information.

As search engine treat them as separate websites if each is but a few webpages, each is but a small website and small websites almost always have difficulty ranking themselves, let alone help in ranking another site.

I wouldn't recommend do this at all if the motive is to develop "link" for your primary domain, your'll get more benefit from straight directory trees by adding "breadth" & "depth" to your website.

<added>A thought noting unique shop owners... while it may appear to be an advantage to sub-domain individual shops, if you intend to promote each via the main domain, these will "all be treated as outgoing links" and unless each shop owner intends to develop their own linking strategy you will likely lose more then you gain.

On the other hand, if you don't link to them (promote) each sub-domain is "orphaned" thus limited potential of being indexed in search engines let alone remaining there... (as such limited credit for you) but you can always develop their linking strategy for them. Food for thought</added>

Hmmm
Thank you Danny and Fathom for your contribution. I had never heard about how subdomains can be orphaned and I think this is a very positive contribution. I have also learned s.thing new about wide and depth of website content in SE ranking. I think it would be a good idea to enrich the content of these shops. Now this has made me understand why some sites have so many articles.

Is it true that a website that is talking about people's opinions (IMHO) ranks high? eg forums? eg search for paypal in google gives their enemies very high ranking through out the first two pages. Search for "paypal company" gives top positions to their enemies. Is this true?
