For those of you who have used linkbaiting to increase the number of inbound links to their site...

Here's my scenario. I want to propose a linkbait technique for a potential employer and I think if seeded properly would increase their site's number of inbound links and hopefully increase their pagerank (amongst other benefits).

I've also read SEOBook's strategies on linkbaiting (http://www.seobook.com/archives/001936.shtml).

But I wanted to get feedback on your favorite methods for seeding your linkbait. What have you found is the best way to get the word out and have others link to your linkbait?

I've got a few ideas of my own but wanted some real-life examples and input on how well your techniques worked.

Thanks for your feedback everybody. But let me clarify.

I already have a few ideas on what the actual linkbait will be (potentially a cool new Flash animation or interactive game...).

But how do you spread the word of so that others notice the linkbait? Do you post your link to certain forums that are directed towards your audience? Do you use press releases?

How do you push the message out there to get your linkbait noticed?

probably not a good idea to self promote in the forums.
contact influential bloggers, journalists, etc in your vertical is one great way to do it. submit to social news sites, social networking sites, the list goes on...
