How can I get a Gmail account? Is invitation the only way, if so how does Google select who gets an invitation?

Is invitation the only way, if so how does Google select who gets an invitation?
Several ways. An obvious one: Clients. Google has sent invitations to Adwords big spenders.

I got my gmail invite from joining an Orkut community for people who want gmail accounts...
Also, you can go to www.gmailswap.com and trade something for a gmail invite!

Great marketing idea--create a scarcity when none really exists. They are using the slow feed method to build appetites. Using the idea that folks will normally only pass something to three others, G has added the restriction one can only pass to three, then in a month these three can pass to three. Very smart move playing on the implied exclusivity and people's emotion of wanting to be the first. They have created a short term status symbol.
As far as getting one, I am sure there are folks visiting here who have been initially invited who would be willing to extend you an invitation.

I had thought of it briefly... but the site Pixel has is a single image single page... and the posts have not really contributed anything of significance... if a more active member wanted one I would gladly pass one along.

I do not think that sounds like a friendly statement.
I'm confused. From reading this thread, is sounds like if you have a gmail account, you can offer a limited number of people their own account. Is this correct?

Yes, after you use your gmail account for some time you start to get invites. It took google around 2 months to send me the first three, but now I seem to be getting 3 per week. I would say the process is speeding up...

Hi Polarmate,
Good to see you over here. The N came from the site title of the one page site..networking. I just like the sound of PSN. To me it has a good resonance and the particular letter combo is easily remembered.

When you posted the request you had 2 or 3 posts... and a single page/single pic web site... I have not seen the name on other sites... hey I did look for reasons to give you an account... but since people are selling them on ebay, you have to also figure sites like this would be great place to get some.
I don't sell them but am not going to give them to people to sell either.
It may have come across as a little harsh... but it was really just a statement of what I had seen...

Sorry to be hard on you, AW! 'Lose the distrust' was what came to mind initially but I guess the game is different on your other forums. And quite honestly, everything is not about $$. So what if you give something to someone and they sell it? The reality is that when you give something to someone, it's no longer yours. It's theirs to do with as they please. The gratifying thing for yourself is that you know your intentions were above board. The toughie is to be able to give without remaining attached to what you gave and that is a real-life problem.
Incidentally, it's possible to figure out which'th post it was that started this thread. Go to the member's profile. Click on 'find all posts...', note the total # of posts made thus far, start at the top and count backwards (as the posts are listed in reverse chronological order) till you hit the post that opened this thread. ;)

Yes, I do understand why you are joining fora, however, it is for the wrong reason. The majority of fora are developed to foster a community of learning and shared experiences. They are a give and take with the emphasis on giving. We all hope to learn something from one another and contribute when we can. If your intent is to learn then you have come to the right place.
At least you are straight up about why you have joined, but if you stick around you may find there is something to learn here. You may even get that sought after account.

Funny I made the comment at the start of this thread and got a few votes against me in the rep thing... and now okay Pixel is contributing and was more than I thought at the time... but I had noticed and it seems it is growing.. a pile of people going to various forums and begging for gmail accounts...

Hey AW, I knew where you were coming from, and understood the reasoning. It is obvious from some of these newer posts their reasoning. With all these drive byes it almost like being in East LA.
At least they should show some originality, like the top ten reasons I should be given a Gmail account. Perhaps then they may get some action. Of course that is not as good as making a few good posts or asking a few pertinent questiions.

What is happening now is spam ;) It was clear from Pixel's posts though that he was not a drive-by.
You are going to get drive-bys if you declare on an open forum that you are giving away invites. Better to do it through PMs or behind 'closed doors' or do something like RustyBrick does on his SE RoundTable blog.

Two weeks ago I sent an email directly to David Krane asking for an account for review purposes. I signed it with my name at www.google-watch.org
I argued that since many journalists were given accounts so that they could write reviews, and since I was also in a position to write a review that would be read by thousands, that I should be given an account.
No dice. Krane put it in the auto-bot responder pool. I guess you have to be a Google groveler to get an account.
The last time I wrote Krane was two years ago, about privacy issues at Google. He sent back a smiley face and a brush-off. So I started Google Watch. Maybe this time I'll start http://gmail-is-too-creepy.com
Oh wait, I already did. During the last seven days it averaged 14,000 visitors per day.
Google's PR (public relations) is about as lame these days as their PR (PageRank).

A fireman would not give pyromaniacs test explosives to see how much damage they do with it. Why would Google want to invite a person who only sees negative stuff in their products to view an early beta release full of whatever bugs may be?
There are tons of people who would give you an invite if you asked them. To complain about being turned down by trying to acquire an account via a means most can not is only furthering your self fullfilling prophecy.

Why the big fuss for a Gmail account anyway? Is it just the thought that because others have one, you want one?
If your that desparate for an online account, MSN are now offering: -
125 times there current email storage with the introduction of a 250 MB inbox as well as the ability to send attachments up to 10 MB
It really isnt that much of a big deal that people are making it IMO. I have one, and altho it was a novelty, it soon wore off ;)
dannysullivan
07-14-2004, 09:25 AM
No, the storage is no big deal. The ability to sort through and find things in your email is.
It used to take Yahoo over a minute to do the same search Gmail can do within a second. When Yahoo recently upgraded, the real change was that they got search times very close to Gmail as well. And when you can search through everything easily, then you are less inclinded to feel you need to throw things out.
I've used a fast desktop-based search tool like this that adds on to Outlook for over a year, so Gmail was no big revelation for me. But if you've never had the chance to do keyword-based, fast email searching, it is eye opening.
Nicky
07-14-2004, 09:49 AM
Ok, accepted ;)
I guess I was trying to get people to be not so desparate for an account, it is a good function to beable to search quickly through your emails, and personally, I do like Gmail, but I dont think the desparation for an account is warranted, and yes, its not up to me to decide for other people, but the world will still be the same when those that dont yet have an account, get one.
All said with good intentions of course.

Actually not any PR professional would tell you the response was stupid. Do you really think a company of this level would reply personally to every email? Get real! The email was just fine and gave you the facts.
is there some reason the invite expires after 6 hours? A friend sent one to my hotmail account and when I wento to check the deal they said it expired . . . .
polarmate
07-22-2004, 08:09 PM
6 hours? I thought it was 2-3 weeks.
<added>The invitation email says:
"[Name] has invited you to open a free Google Gmail account. The
invitation will expire in three weeks and can only be used to set up one
account."
</added>
then they must not like me! :(
It might have been 7 or 8 hours (with time zones it's hard to tell) but it definitely wasn't 2-3 weeks. I got hosed! :(
I thought I heard through the grapevine they might have had something against people with hotmail accounts. But that makes no sense to me.

Now here's my Xangarizzle, all updated and personalized... On one hand, yes I'd LOVE to have a G-Mail account! But not enough that I'd ever consider paying for something that will be offered free eventually anyway... And the whole blogger thing...::sigh:: Man, and to think a year ago I debated whether to join xanga or blogger... But honestly, a year ago, xanga seemed so much more sophisticated to me! Now here's my Xangarizzle, all updated and personalized... But what has xanga done for ME lately? ::Quickly runs back to Xanga to see if a G-Mail account has been given to him::...nope...just more harrasment to go "premium"...*sigh*
Can you send me an gmail invitation?

See now, no one can get an invite from me unless it's someone I know personally, who I know will not sell or engage in trade of such. Believe it or not, I've had people I've known for ages turn them down when I offered them.

my roommate is using MSN and refused. I know that makes him crazy but perhaps he likes that stupid "brought to you by MSN" garbage they throw at the top of pages when you follow links out of their email.
not quite as proprietary as the AOL network, but Hotmail is still really really really bad.

I have not had any new accounts to give away... seems like 3-4 weeks now they have stopped replenishing the invitation pile.

The last one I had was on July 24, and instead of the usual three G sent one invite.
