Hey Guys!
Well my company is in the midst of finalizing our '05 SEM budget and I was just informed that I need to have budgets and a list of International SE for our company to expand to by the beginning of next week. With that being said, I would welcome any help from anyone who might be able to supply me with some good information on the following countries:

UK
Singapore
Ireland
France
Europe (As a whole)
Hong Kong
Austrailia
Germany
Canada
Mexico & Latin America
South America

Thanks for the help!!  :D

Happy to help with the European countries (note countries) - we can't really answer a general European question because it's too vague..

Could you just post what questions you would like answered and I think you'll get a useful response from the people on this forum!

Cheers,

Andy

I am interested in finding out what the popular search engines are for all of those countries.

Happy to help you with some information referring to popular search engines in Germany. Our research over the past few weeks has shown that Google is the most popular search engine next to T-Online that uses Google search, and Web.de that used to use Google search but switched to Inktomi and from Inktomi to Smart Search. Apart from these search engines, MSN, AOL, Altavista and Yahoo are popular too.

Outside of the Big Engines Like Google, MSN, Yahoo and Alta Vista are there popular "country specific" engines that locals use?

There are definitely country specific engines - but many of the European coutries are dominated by Google - see the thread on this elsewhere...

Google domination factor (http://forums.searchenginewatch.com/showthread.php?t=279)

In the UK, Google is a little less dominant than in other European countries but still at the top - we put them currently in the following order with Google at around 65% of the market:-

Google
Yahoo
MSN
Ask Jeeves
AOL Search
My Search
NTL World
BBC

The BBC is the principal UK local search engine - although it uses Inktomi and it is common for European localised search engines to be using someone else's index. I guess it's not so easy to create and manage a large crawl/index like that.

Exceptions include Ilse in the Netherlands and Voila.

See our piece on the possible development of the BBC search engine which may end up getting further developed.

We've noticed improvements in visitor referrals this year from both Ask and the BBC! This little piece refers to the BBC aspect.

Hello teno :)

Try these links:

Hope this helps!

One thing to keep in mind when you are optimizing for local areas is that you are best off getting a local TLD for it, as many major SE's give a rankings "boost" to local sites. Getting lots of local links is good too.

Google decides what local you are in by IP and TLD. MSN, Yahoo, and Teoma use linking analysis and TLD.

I believe an individual page can only be assigned a single country (ie it can't be Canadian and German, for example) but you can have multiple country assigned pages within a single site.

I recommend creating country specific subsections of your site to deal with this - it should go without saying that this content should be unique, and not duplicated.

Another very good resource is the Internet Search Engine Database: http://www.isedb.com/

Here are some Canadian search engines and directories (not a complete list):

General Canadian Directories

La Toile (http://www.toile.qc.ca/)

Yellow Pages.ca (http://www.yellowpages.ca/searchBusiness.do) (this one is used for Canadian local results in Google)

Local Sites.ca (http://www.localsites.ca/)

Canada One (http://www.canadaone.com/)

Super Pages.ca (http://www.superpages.ca/)

CANLink Directory (http://www.canlinks.net/)

Canadians Internet (http://www.canadiansinternet.com/shopping/)

Specialty Directories

Government of Canada Internet Addresses (http://canada.gc.ca/directories/internet_e.html)

Some Province and City Directories

Ontario Directory (http://www.ontariodirectory.net/XcDirectory/XcDirectory.asp)

Search Calgary.ca (http://www.searchcalgary.ca/) (disclosure: this one is mine)

Ian
