lol.... ity can be done but you need to have a little money to start and a lot of time to invest.
basically you want to create a site about a topic you know and that is not too popular - well not to competitive (the popular topics usually are)... then get links and be seen by the search engines so you get free organic traffic that converts using adsense or other selling programs (affiliate marketing or media publishing (banners).....

ABC News and specifically the reporter that put together this video report teaches people how to become money makers from home based jobs (company agents working at home answering phones for large companies) and businesses.
Watch this video:

See the other reports from this reporter, you can find them on the same website.

To expand on AussieWebmaster's note about "create a site about a topic you know." This is very important as the usual second question after "How do I make money on the Internet?" is "Where do I find content?" For experienced sales folks or people who approach things programatically this isn't a problem as they can sell anything. For a beginnner it's most important so they are at least on somewhat of a familiar footing.
First, tinnk about the things you know and enjoy and think you can write about. Then do a bit of web research to find sites on these subjects, see how they're presented and how the sites might be montized.
After a while it will be time to bring it all together -- what type of content, how you're going to present it and what money making ideas you're going to use.

1) Writing and marketing your own products:A good writer can produce ebooks on various targeted material derived from keyword searches. Find out what people are searching for most and write about it.
2)Marketing via a Reseller's Rights Package:If you're not good at writing, you might consider selling other people's products. There are numerous ebooks that come with reseller's rights, some give it to when you purchase the ebook, others require and additional fee for the right to sell it. Once you have the reseller's rights, you can market these products and keep 100% of the profits.
3. Promoting Affiliate Program Products:Affiliate Programs like ClickBank let you promote thousands of products as their affiliate. Most ClickBank affiliate commissions range from 35% to 70%. Many of the products are based on Internet marketing, but there are plenty of non-marketing products to make it worth while to join for free.
4)Using Google AdSense:Google AdSense, like ClickBliss, allows you to place a "tower" of ads on all of your web pages. Income is derived from your visitors clicking on the ads. Advertisers pay a certain amount per click to advertise with AdSense, and so you get a percentage of the revenue from each click received from your webpages.
5)Selling on EBay:From selling items you get from yard sales to being a drop shipping agent for corporate wholesalers, EBay give you many ways to generate an income. They charge a nominal fee to become an EBay Merchant, but it's well worth what you can earn through this outlet.
You could also try out some paid surveys.I can't say how but myself would want an explanation whether paid surveys make you money or not.

That was a good overview.... EBay is a market that has a lot of scope
