View Full Version : Is opening an AdWords account easy?

When you're an AdWords specialist you tend to take a lot for granted.
It's not often I get involved in opening a new AdWords account, since all my clients usually have one. But the other day I got a call from a new client who needed help... with opening the account!
The reason apparently was that the account open process required them to write an ad, and that totally intimidated them, since they thought they were "just opening an account to hand over to a specialist, not to write the ads". So they bailed out and called me.
Of course, I was surprised. But it got me to thinking, how easy is the AdWords account opening process for a total novice. It should be *very, very* easy, but is it?
Any comments would be appreciated. I would especially like to hear from new AdWords users.

Well, you COULD open one for them and give them the login and details to add their CC information.
Alternatively, just go through it with them on the phone, ask them to create any ad with any text and then delete the campaign. Use the opportunity to get the analytics account linked and you added to it.

Well yes of course, I can and do help them this way. But that was not my point, my point is trying to get feedback on the account opening process for the average new customer who has to do it themselves.

Well, Google really couldn't have made it any easier. Just make sure they are using the starting edition:

It is very easy, but I could see how a non-SEM could be scared away by the 'Create an ad' screen.

Yes, that's what happened. So I'm considering developing a product that would help this situation, and maybe others.

Very easy to do. The most intimidating thing is the one your customer ran into - being creative. You have a limited amount of space in which to get your message across.

Thanks for all your replies. There does seem to be consensus that "writing an ad" is intimidating for new AdWords clients.
So.. I'm going to attempt to attack this problem head-on by developing a free service that will *totally automate production of an AdWords ad* for any given page. Give it a URL, get an Ad. It will work with AdWords only.
Having been in the business so long I realize this will not easy to say the least. But what the heck. I'll post the announcement as a new thread.
Wish me luck :)

That's actually a fantastic idea. Best of luck with it. Perhaps something that uses the API might work?
