View Full Version : MSN Seems To Have Really Changed Algorithm

Okay I really have not been doing thorough checks for Live Search recently but I looked at it today and we have been a little impacted - but of more
concern is the crap I see rising to the top.
The use of keywords in the domain must have gotten a boost recently... the are two at the top - one is a .net with the keyword phrase hyphenated and the second listing is the same but with best in front of it.
One is a three page site the other has maybe 15 pages.
What is going on folks?

Even, I can't understand the philosphy of Msn or Live.com. I am not seeing any kind of best relevance theory which is the most important thing in Search Algo, I think.
Nothing is accurate in commands also. I have only 60 pages for my website and its showing 289 results....

That's the problem - the relevance is questionable at best. Try a search for forex broker - the results are ridiculous. I get that "drop the sites that spend on PPC and maybe they will boost their spends" feeling.....

They just continue to get it wrong. Instead on working on the current issues, (relevancy springing to mind straight away) they increase their index up to 20 billion pages (supposedly)
I think its a fair assumption that with 4 times the amount of pages in their index there is going to be more irrelevant results popping up.
Great!

But when you had a spot and you drop and crap replaces it... and you go from page 1 to nowhere (well I stopped after 20 pages) you have to wonder what the hell is going on.

I love the "improved core relevance" blurb. They tout the number two result for [microsoft taco truck] but totally ignore the first piece of crap returned. All this shows me is that keywords in the URL is what it's all about for Live.

MSN search lost their indexed database at the same time Google did around Big Daddy, they have never been the same since.
Live.com is still trying to get it together, I know they don't have the firepower to properly index the web, nor do any of the other engines, Google included, this is why they were moving so much to supplemental and still are.
I do know for a fact that Microsoft has purchased additional firepower or opened data centers in Chicago, so they may do better indexing down the road, they are sending us more traffic in the last few months, but Yahoo is down for the count, Live has passed them up.
I just hope that MSN will fix their database problem to go back to the circulation...

MSN Have become a Joke, the site submission http://beta.search.msn.co.uk/docs/submit.aspx does not work. The index is totally shot.
Google and Yahoo must be laughing all the way to the bank.
I'm telling clients to forget MSN and have paused all my Adcenter accounts.
It a pity they do read these forums they may learn a thing or two.

We've seen the same problem with the URL submission not working. Additionally, our company has been listed for years in their site. All the sudden 800 pages became 3. The search engine results coming from MSN right now are horrible. Hopefully they will get a handle on this, as I know our company is ready to pull our advertising account with this type of junk coming out of their search engine.

In the last few months Live.com has been sending us more referrals, but I have not checked all of those to see if they are legitimate, on some of our sites many of the referrals coming from them were from spammers attacking the engine with referral spam that is somehow showing in the logs.
There is some sort of hole in MSN/Live search or these spammers are spoofing them to get webmasters to click on their referral spam.

I don't this so, Aussie.
I have a website which has highly competitive keywords in domain, but i haven't seen any good ranks for that site..
There is something else which is needed to explore for Live Search Algo...
Well, I am searching :)

"problems" seems to be an understatement for certain... having checked indexed pages of one of our domains now shows the only single indexed page is one that i have never seen in the index before and in fact hasn't existed for at least 7 years, prior to current ownership, lol. what did they do, pull out an archived database from the 90's so they'd have something to pull results from? and yes, url submission does work now, but it apparently does not get the site into the index. maybe if i could find a time machine.......

The important factor to MSN is "relevancy". And you are right keywords in domain name is much effective in the ranking of keywords. Make sure that the meta tags arranged correctly and
make sure that you label the different header of your web pages.
