.co.uk is for if your company is UK specific.
buy the dot com and .co.uk if they are both available (and .net ideally) and then use 301 permanent redirects from the .com, .net to your .co.uk

If you are a uk company market the site as only .co.uk

.com used to be more heavyweight in the serps many moons ago but from what Ive seen it makes no difference now if the site is good.

The leaders in my niche are all .co.uk's and we are a .com but I did it the wrong way round as no one told me!!

.co.uk is a country code TLD while .com is a commercial and a generic TLD making it the most popular and the most used TLD.

While what you say is correct.

It is very much country dependant in practice I have found.
For example, more companies in the US use .com for their main site than .us domains....

However in the uk, a lot of companies seem to prefer the .co.uk purely because it does indicate through google.co.uk etc that this is a UK company to all their traffic who then know they are relevant and go and look at the site.
