Hi Everybody,

Can anyone explain in simpler words, what is semantic indexing or LSI?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Everybody,

LSI considers the entire document collection as a whole. LSI considers documents with a high number of words in common to be near neighbors, semantically speaking.

Note, LSI is not the same as "semantic indexing".

Hope that helps and best of luck!

Thanks Beu for the explanation that you provided for LSI. Since, you said that LSI and semantic indexing both are different concepts.

Can you please explain what is semantic indexing?

In short LSI is terms use to analyze relationships between a set of documents and a set of concepts with the specific terms that related to the documents. It requires lot of research, data mining/text mining to drive specific matching terms and relationship through mathematical calculations.

Sure, I was just pointing out that LSI is not the same as semantically related keywords.

Aaron Wall has some good information on this topic:

There are a couple of papers listed here that make the explanations very simple

LSI is a process that allows a search engine to determine what a page is about outside of specifically matching search query text. It takes words, compares it to other words and in some cases symbols to determine if they are somehow related or relevant to one another.

LSI is also used to ensure that the theme of a site matches the incoming link anchors within the page...
