I have two questions:

I am working on a site with lots of press where the web guy has, in my opinion, made a few boobos. 1) he placed copies of press locally for reference from it's news section. 2) he uses onClick everywhere to link to his press references.

1) I would think it would be stronger to link directly to a press article verses making a local copy of the article and presenting it at the local domain?

2) But - Considering the above - what about press articles that run an add prior the display of the article? Will SE's follow the link past the advertisement? If not - what's the best course of action.

(I am having change all the onclicks to straight hrefs via showing him an article I read here just yesterday. Thanks for that one already.)

Cheers!

1 - stronger in what sense? serving your customers, SEO, "professionalism"? If you are thinking SEO, outbound links don't make you stronger; you may not be hurt by certain outbound links, but you won't be made "SEO strong". If you are thinking about the others -then that's a judgment call.

2 - again, if you are linking out the articles, then it doesn't matter. outbound links are going to make you SEO stronger so how the SEs follow your link to the OTHER website isn't something you need to worry about - if you are talking SEO.

Yes - I am thinking in terms of SEO strong.

This was purely theoretical logic on my part as I was thinking in terms of the benefits of reciprocal links. That said - Why are reciprocal links helpful in building SEO strength or does the reciprocation not really matter - that is: you only really need link in and the reciprocation is just a courtesy.

Thanks...

If you have news articles written about your company, the best LINKS are ones FROM the articles (sites) linking into you. Linking to them wont help you in terms of SEO - but may not hurt you either. To play it safe - if you have inbound links from the articles and they didn't ask for the link back, don't link back.
