Hi
I'm thinking about changing servers from a hosted one to one that I will build myself mainly for the added bonuses this has to SEO and secruity.

However I want to know what possible impact this might have on my site?

Obviously it wont be shared so I wont get penalized for others bad habits who share the same server at my host. But will I get penalized for the different server change?
edit: The server will be in the UK and my hosts at the moment is in the UK.

My personal opinion is no.

But what do you guys think?

Why would building your own server give you extra SEO benefit? Its not going to offer anything different unless you can build one to go get links.

As far as the security is concerned, not my domain but I leave this to the managed plan I have with my dedicated server. I would imagine that unless you knew what your were doing its not going to give you any extra security either.

You don't get "penalized" for being on a shared host. I know of only one documented case were this has happened and it was many years ago. This notion today IMO, is obsurd

Oh and your answer is no unless you find some way to f**k it all up

Hi
Cheers for clearing that up it's now just a security thing then and I've posted my first dumbass thread brill what a noob .

I thought it wasn't right and sounded like crap, but I have got an SEO book that says it could be an issue if some one uses black hat etc... on the same server, and as it was in the book I took it for gospel. I think it was the dummies one, cant be 100% sure, and they are normally spot on.

DON'T BUY THAT BOOK THEN.

Security as I've been hacked twice, my fault for a lax program I wrote, this has now been fixed with hardcore/overkill security.

Why?

1. I'm anal
2. Cant access my php.ini file again number 1 comes in.
3. My host has a slightly week set up that I don't need but other people do and I know I could do better.
4. I've taken the hack very personal as I was down for 3 days. So I do know what I'm doing as a result.

I'll still probley fu*k it up lol.

Cheers mate one embaressed coder.

I do disagree that it does not make a differnce though as I've been looking into foreign SEO, you might tell I like to look at every possible variable before I acted hence this crap post. I have seen/heard and read it makes a difference when it comes to server location and locality hence ebay.co.uk server based over here amazon.co.uk again over here. paypal again over here. I know their are other possible reasons why they would spend $/£x moving over here but I do beleave it makes a difference in that sense. Trying to recover some dignity.

Nothing to be embarrassed about mate. Most of the books are outdated and have conflicting advice. Thats why I never buy any (I download them instead :) )

Best to take the info for what its worth and form your own opinions from experience. Im not saying that it doesnt happen but your not going to get banned for it thats for sure. (heres hoping it doesn't happen :) )

Having the server on location would certainly be a plus for many but for me (since I know nothing about them), I just go for the next best thing.

3 days, thats nasty. Hope its sorted now!

Yeah it was an external js script hidden to the right(so you had to scroll)and the bottom and added to the end of a line of code.

If you need to re-vise security I would advise -

1. How to Break Web Software. 250 pages but it covers everything and I mean everything and then how to fix everything. You would be surprised how easy it is to get passwords you think are secure hence my server and storing passwords on my comp which alone has 2 firewalls etc..etc.. and an interal password protected program(That i'm looking at writing).

2. Essential PHP Security again short but the must for any php coder.

3. Pro PHP Security so you can build your own algorithums and generate your own SSL certificates and set up a SSL webserver.

Next I'm looking into building honeypots but as my secruity is top notch at the mo. I've got other isssues like wasting time on this forum lol.

I've gone a bit loopy after the second hack. But fu*k um.

Cheers buddy.
