Hey keegan. Your question tends to imply there's a "simple" method to making money online.

In truth, any path you follow will require skills, time and patience.

...and some money. ;)

Now, and this is only my opinion, I do think you can accomplish your goal. In fact, I know you can. :D

I set the same goal for myself years ago - how can I make some money online, without investing a lot and with the knowledge I had (not using others to do the work for me).

So, I taught myself HTML editing by using Dreamweaver (helped that I had a free copy of this software). You don't "need" it, but it's nice gear. ;)

Next I asked myself what i liked. This is critical because anything online will take time. More time if you have less money to invest, because YOU have to do ALL the work.

Since I was into Jeeps and offroading, I started a Jeep-focused website. I added about 200 pages of unique content (all written by me because I understood the topic well enough).

I followed that with a blog attached to the website to make things easy to set up and maintain.

Today I have a few such websites and using Adsense they pull in four figures a month from Google's Adsense program.

Now, that's the quick and dirty outline:

1 - build & optimize a site
2 - monetize it with soemthing like adsense
3 - grow the site over time
4 - in time the traffic increases and revenues too

In truth, it took about a year to really start seeing traffic and revenue. Remember I said pick a topic you enjoy? The biggest reason is so that when things don't seem to be doing anything, you'll still be interested enough to keep plugging away at it.

NOTHING happens overnight - and while folks like to think the Internet is a fast was to make money, in most cases, it's not. It's like any other business. You make the plan, execute to the plan and in time, business arrives.

The great thing is that you can start on the cheap.

Make sure to get yourself set up on a Linux-based server, if possible when it comes to hosting. This will help with some small tweaking things that can help the site with the engines. Windows servers are different in how they accomplish the same things, and usually require the host themselves to do something for you. They usually won't because it's not just you on the server, and what they do for you affects every site on the server.

For now, start by asking yourself what you enjoy most, and could you float the hosting bills for the next year until things take off. Also, be honest with yourself when it comes to search marketing knowledge. There's still plenty of traffic to be found the old fashioned way - through search optimization - and it's little to no-cost traffic - if you have the skills.

if not, start by learning the basics of that, then tackle a website/blog (optimization techniques differ slightly between the two), then keep at it for a while.

When you feel like throwing in the towel, come back and read this thread - DON'T GIVE UP YET!

...and, as luck would have it, I've just written a book on building, optimizing and monetizing blogs. It's due out in January 2008. It's loaded with tips and techniques to optimize Wordpress blogs (and some others) and reviews all the bigger ad and affiliate programs out there. I've used them all (the ones in the book) so the info is based on experience. ;)

Anyway, the point is this:

You can do it - I know this, because I did it. It's not enough to quit my day-job, but hey, who wouldn't want an extra grand a month on the side?

...and if you had, say, 5 - 6 successful sites like this up and running, it would be your day job.

do a google search for the market research sites... try top keywords search for help with adsense...

time has a value so you are investing - but if it is truely free time then spend it wisely

Sportsguy did have a good post. Thanks for sharing.
In Vietnam, only Adsense for Search is supported. What a pity.

Really like this question. The naivite. The audacity. Screaming - Guys, give me a free lesson - tell me how to make money online!

One could pose the question: Keegan, do you REALLY trust us here?
One could pose another question: Keegan, do you care if it's money made ethically or legally?
One could pose many more questions.

I find this rather poetic and yet, sad and pathetic. Assuming Keegan is American, it is reflective of a growing number of Americans who feel owning a business is a constitutional right instead of a constitutional freedom.

The strong survive and prosper while the others wither "the way to dusty death..." For do you not know, that "life's but a walking shadow, a poor player who struts and frets his hour upon the stage and then is heard no more; it is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing."

...

You can't earn that much if you can't get good amount of site traffic. There's a saying that 'the higher the traffic, the higher the revenue'. The best thing to do is to promote your site thru blog writing, article submission, social bookmarkings, online classified ads, etc.
