In my limited research so far, I've learned that it's much more valuable to have keywords within the anchor text as opposed to just a URL or a "click here", so if I'm trying to optimize for the keywords "cheap, red widgets":

Cheap Red Widgets (http://www.example.com)

would be preferrable to:

http://www.example.com

or:

ABC Widgets Inc. (http://www.example.com)

but is this recommended for the millions and millions of directories and 2nd tier directories out there, or should the link text be restricted to the company name or URL when used for listing purposes?

Anchor text should describe the content of the landing page.

Yes, I realize that. My question is, is it appropriate to have that type of descriptive anchor text in a directory listing a whole bunch of company names and/or URL's?

If linking to your "homepage" chances are that it would not be appropriate. That said, most listings allow for a description of the site.

My question is, is it appropriate to have that type of descriptive anchor text in a directory listing a whole bunch of company names and/or URL's?Some directories allow keyword anchor text and some require the name of the site as the listing title. Having good anchor text is a good thing, but a mixture of that and the company name (or other variations) is usually considered to be "natural" looking.
