hello, I have recently been asked to help optimize a website's pages. I started by adding meta descriptions, keywords etc and also changing the titles to include some keywords based on the overall site, but also individual page content.

however, when searching(mostly using msn/google) based on keywords but also using Google's site: prefix, i noticed that most of the pages being shown in the results do not reflect the updates i have made. when i click them, its fine and the updated page is shown.

googles webmaster tools says it has crawled the site since the updates but i don't know how to make them show in the actual results. without it, its hard for me to know if the updates i have made are helping or hindering things.

could anyone offer some advice?

thank you for your time

:)

Check on the "cached" version:
- when were the changes made?
- is the new page cached?
- is the URL in Google's cache is the same as the URL in the SERPS?
- is the cached date before or after the date that the new content went live?

Other:
- is there a robots.txt?
- are you using any kind of redirect (IE 301 / 302)?

hello, thanks for replying,

using one page as an example, when i click 'cached' besides the result, it says it was cached on march 18th, the changes to that page were done 2weeks ago.

i'm not sure how i can tell if the new page is cached too though sorry?

the urls are the same.

i don't use a robot.txt as i don't actually understand them yet. should i be using one?

not using any redirects no.

thanks :)

Are the less frequently crawled pages listed as Supplemental when doing a site:example.com search, and are the showing any PR in the toolbar?

search for cache:?.com (replace ?.com with URL)

Is the page at the bottom the new page?

Also, do as Marcia said and let us know what you come up with!

hello you two, thanks for helping me.

Marcia, when i did that site:search all of the pages were listed individually, none were indented..doesthat mean they were not supplementary?sorry if i have the wrong end of the stick. the page i changed the most had a page ranking of 3/10 which isn't very good is it. the home page had a PR of 4/10. is there a way to determine the less frequently crawled pages? or is it a case of seeing when they were last cached?

beu, i did the cache: search using the url of the page that i updated the most and it brought up the old version below the white google top bit. is it correct that it brought up the actual page or was it supposed to list all of them in chached order? ie i did something wrong?

yahoo is showing the newest version.

thanks

Did you change the URLs?

If you see the old page in the cache chances are they have be crawled but not ranked and included in SERPS as of yet.

When you search using "site:", are the old pages cached or are the new pages cached?

To do this click on "cached" (bottom line, right of URL) in the supp. results as is seen in the SERP example below:

BLAH BLAH : The Inside Story
The ultimate resource for the blah blah blah. Jobs, stocks, and much, much more.
www . ?.com/ - 20k - Cached - Similar pages

no the urls are all the same. i just reuploaded.

when i do the site search, it varies as to whether the new or old pages are cached. I made the changes to the pages on the same day, yet some of the new ones are cached and some not. one was cached may 19th and one on march 17th, yet both were updated around the 15th of may
