I'm trying to get a client's web developer to initiate 301 redirects for a redeveloped web site. They are resisting modifying the htaccess file because it can "seriously screw up a website depending on how the server is configured. I know, I tried it and the site disappeared".

Has anyone had a similar issue implementing 301 redirects or modifying the htaccess file?

Thanks.

Yes, pretty standard stuff! The server admin should be able to implement a 301. The method is different depending on your server and/or configuration.

Good Luck!

.htaccess works well on apache servers, and though it is possible to put your site of line i have :) it is the way to go.

which host is it? most will help with this, and may provide info for you on their site.

by the way I am searching for info on:

The default redirect in an RSS feed is a 302 redirect. This is bad news. Set it to a 301.
