I need to find out why and how some sites display sub-pages in the SERPS. Would they need to have a Google site map? I'm seeing these mostly in the top results but not positive about that.

To explain what I mean, they are simply 4 or 5 additional links under the main site link.

Google calls those Site Links (http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?answer=47334).

They're algorithmically generated. There's been a lot of supposition as to how Google chooses which links to include; it certainly has enough types of data from which to choose. The one (almost) certainty is that a solid and stable navigation structure is a good place to start.

Great information but, I would add that a "site sitemap" would also be a good idea. Search engines need to see your site linking to pages in the "Google Sitemap".

The site already has a site map - do you think that would make a difference between that and a Google generated site map?
