What are some of the reasons content network should be used? I am experiencing a large number of impressions from the content network and not many clicks.
I would like to get targeted traffic and increase my CTR, content network does not seem to provide either one of these, since an ad can show up any where that the content is relevent.

The content network can drive more site visitors than just search and the search network, however, the CTR and conversion performance don't hold up at all. Typically, with content network buys, your traffic goes up, but your CTR and CVR go down.
We've seen some success with content network for brand or highly-specific keywords...maybe it's worth a test if you've got some money to play with. I recommend segmenting into another campaign those keywords you'd like to test on the content network. If you find it doesn't work, then you can always reactivate your adgroup within the other campaign.

content traffic is definitely a broader application and not a search result... but you get great branding on good sites if you do your work right... and the clicks convert decently when done right.

I get some *great* results from the Content network. But, you need conversion tracking in place. Then, look at your cost/conversion, and don't worry about impressions or CTR. Look at #conversions and cost/conversion. That's what it's all about.

I don't think there is a gray area for content. It's either feast or famine. For me, every time we try it...famine. I've tried for generic terms, specific terms, our brand...just a waste of money.
If you decide to do this, you'll need to watch it like a hawk. Or just not care about CPA...

The content network is useful sometimes...
Use it when it works for ROI. Often, since it's got a bad reputation, you may find that you competitors have shied away from it... but it may be a decent source of traffic at a reasonable price.
No - content network is not about CTR... count only your ROI and you'll be ok.

definitely would have bought you the martini... the job... you will have to wait until I go out on my own... at this stage we only need very entry level people.

You can never underestimate the value of a good martini. Let me know when you go out on your own :)
