I'm talking now re. redirecting visitors to a new site.

How can I get the search engines to list the url of the new site?

Hi there,

If you are talking about redirecting pages from an old site to a new URL/Domain - you should use 301 redirects. This is a way to tell search engines that the pages have been moved... permanently.

Do searches on '301 redirects' here (SEW forums) and in Google - you will find a ton of info. Depending whether you are hosting with Apache servers vs. Microsoft servers -there are different methods to accomplish this.
Apache = .htaccess file redirects
Microsoft = IIS redirects

Both are relatively easy to do.

Just in case this is not what you're referring to - ie. you have a brand new site... you should submit your site manually to the search engines and ...

(you should do this anyways if you are redirecting pages from an old site - after creating your 301 redirects)

develop an xml sitemap (easy - www.xml-sitemaps.com for example) and submit this to Google Sitemaps as well as Yahoo... You can find everything you need to know and more about Google Sitemaps - in Google's Webmaster Tools...

I should end this by saying - it will take time for the search engines to start caching these new pages - but I have been pleasantly surprised by the speed in which (google in particular) has updated changes recently.

Hope this helps!
Good luck!
