Has anybody heard of this new thing Wikia? It's supposed to be Wikiapedia's answer to a new type of search engine. I don't know much about it except that it launched this spring.

Really? It looks just like Wikipedia. The functionality does not seem to be there though. I love Wikipedia as an on-line encyclopedia. I created a Wikia account and it seems a little cumbersome and not very easy to use. I don't really see that it will do anything. At least not in it's current state.

So far Wikia is just a hosting service for wiki-formatted content. With ads.

The Wikia plan seems to be to suck up much of the fan content that gets thrown out of Wikipedia as "fancruft". Then Wikia attaches ads to it. It might be a reasonable place to advertise if you're selling, say, a book of cheat codes for the PS3.

Especially if it's for a Star Wars related game:

http://www.wikia.com/wiki/Statistics - Wikia's Alexa statistics - indicate that the main section with a high traffic ranking is "starwars.wikia.com", which used to be "Wookieepedia.com". So if you're operating a Star Wars fansite, you need to be in Wikia. Otherwise, probably not.

But it's not a search engine. It's not even a web directory.

Perhaps you should tell them about Ireland:
http://search.wikia.com/wiki/Special:Search?search=ireland&go=Go

Perhaps you should try searching the correct page

What? I'm not sure what you mean... When I go to the URL and type "Ireland" in the search box I get "There is no page titled "Ireland". You can create this page."
