I have experienced situations where you can achieve top organic ranks despite building too many links for your website. If you target right keyword on atargeted domain, you ought to get huge traffic... thoughts?

In certain cases yes. Depends on the age of and how google seems your domain. Also depends on the keywords you are targeting

i.e 2007 site with 20k links OR

1998 site with 5k links
