View Full Version : SES - NY - April 2007 - the usual - who's in?

I will be attending again. :)
So, who's going?
I love the NY show - great turnout, good folks and, well, I *heart* NY.
My wife and I will be driving down from Eastern Canada a couple days before the event to enjoy the city, then heading back on Friday after the show. Going to make it a "road-trip-spring-vacation-to-the-city" type thing. Can't wait.
***OK, so 65 people have read the thread and no one from this very targeted audience is htnking of going to this show? :(

Have fun everyone :)

I wish.
My company doesn't see the value of sending their two online marketers to these events.
Gotta love management who doesn't know the landscape of their marketplace.
Time to jump ship? lol

To clarify, Joe usually sticks up a thread detailing parties a week or two before the conference. It will be posted in this section and one of us will make sure it's added to the homepage as a featured thread. Fingers crossed there will be a couple of open door parties, but Joe will be clarifying it all soon.

caugas,
The easiest way to meet folks for a drink on any of the SES NYC nights is to stake a place in one of the two lobby bars. Be warned however, both fill up extremely quickly. Also, if I remember correctly, the larger of the two doesn't open until late afternoon :(
Otherwise, check back here for Joe's schedule and be sure to sign up for the public parties at the booths of the firms sponsoring them.
A lot of pre-organization goes out the window when you are in the actual conference environment. There is simply so much happening at the same time and so many people to see.
I am trying to get a group of search writers/bloggers together for dinner/drinks the Monday night before the show.

Me visiting Ireland or you visiting London? You're more than welcome at any LondonSEO event - there's one next week if Ryanair haven't put the prices up from 1p to 100 quid yet! As for Ireland, I will be visiting this year, although it keeps getting put back. Currently looking at popping over some time in May for a bit of a road trip. Would be mighty fine if a DublinSEO event coincided with the trip ;)

LOL Caugas, I said the same thing after SES Chicago -- I should have registered with Mel66 instead of my real name, so that would be on my badge! The looks on people's faces when I introduced myself to them were priceless - first it was "who's this chick" when I gave my real name, then "Oh! Hi! Great to meet you!!" when I said, "I'm Mel66."
I think it'd be a riot to walk around the show and see badges with "evilgreenmonkey" and "sportsguy" and "AussieWebmaster" and such instead of Tom, Dick, and Harry...

That's what the back of the badges are for.
Because I have my own firm that contracts my services to others, the name of my firm is rarely on my media pass or show badge. I always tuck a business card in the back of the badge holder. That way if the badge gets turned around, the name is still showing.

To look at this from the reverse, it'd make knowing who everyone is easier if this forums had picture 'avatars' so we could place the face with the ID. Most people use unique screennames so unless you really get to know someone you'd be walking around trying to interpret their tags into proper names.
then again, if SEwatch allowed graphics like they (maybe they do?) then people would be trying to game that with cleavage pics and Zune contests etc!

hi all,
I am from India and have been on and off in the SEO business for almost 4 yrs. I work for a medium firm now and the focus for this year's business is SEO. I was wondering if it made sense for me to attend the SES NY. I mean considering hte costs involved will it make business sense to attend it. Well let me be direct about it. Is is place where - besides all the knowledge and networking I would do - could I also look at getting new business? Because that will realy be the factor for the management to approve the travel.
Your suggestions / recommendations most welcome.

I've merged your thread with an existing active thread as they're on similar topics and you will probably get a better response.
I've only been to 1 SES where I touting for business and our company has a stand - which worked out quite well. Maybe some of the other guys on this thread have more experience in gaining clients at an event like SES NY?

I'll try this again - we just lost power here at the office, and I lost a great reply here.... *sobs*
OK, yeah, the bars in the lobby - great place to meet folks. I just tend to sidle up to a group, introduce myself and go from there. I am NOT a wallflower...LOL
Badges - cut a piece of stock (business card type paper - thicker stuff) to the same width as your badge holder and a bit taller than the rest of the stuff stuffed into the holder - write your username on the front and back.
Don't forget initials of where you use the username - like SEW, SEF, SEL, etc. So yeah, if you have multiple handles, you might want to just pick one and run with it. ;)
Now, for eateries. I collect menus from each place I eat and post them up on my office wall for reference by others.
Amma - Indian food - excellent place, excellent food. Space is limited so call ahead - if they can fit more than 15 people in there I'd be surprised.
ChinChin - top-drawer oriental cuisine - upscale-ish, but they're not put off by jeans. Prices are good and they'll happily customize pretty much anything on the menu to suit your tastes.
Zen Palate - WOW! - If you like vegetarian, this place rocks - heck, even if you eat meat, they still rock, though they don't serve any - the food is amazing, the pricing very good - eat in (3 location) or take out - I can't wait to go back in a few weeks!
Vinyl - small cafe closer to the docks than Time Square. Themed to follow music - most of the decor is old records. HUGE selection of beers from around the world. Themed washrooms - not men's and womens. Hip Hop, Country, Elvis, etc. - decor and music fit each theme inside the commode. ;)
Now, for on-the-fly stuff, Dean and Deluca over at Rockefeller Center (5 minutes form the Hilton) serves excellent java, etc. Great way to wake up in the AM - a quick stroll and a coffee/tea/latte, etc.
Towards Time's Square (about 5 - 10 minutes away) you'll find Ray's (IIRC) - excellent pizza - cheap, and huge slices.
Just up from Ray's is a small hole-in-the-wall soup joint (call it 2 blocks) - fresh made soups several times daily. Perfect for the evening chill.
...and if you've got a sweet tooth, head towards 5th Ave. and look for Fauchon - excellent chocolates and some of the sweetest hot chocolate I've ever had - VERY RICH! ...and you'll pay for it...
Just a couple blocks up from the Hilton - towards Central Park - is the Astro Diner - some of the best breakfasts to be found - big portions, decent prices, very fast service - and the atmosphere - classic diner, Mel included... ;)
...and yes, the hot dogs and pretzels from the street vendors are great, too!
Yeah, I know, I sound like a tour guide - but hey, I *HEART* NY!
As for events - my Tuesday evening is full, and I might be hosting an event on Wednesday evening - I'll post up as I finalize the details. Just remember, if I'm hosting this event, it'll be for In-House SEMs only... ;) ...because it'll be sponsored by SEMPO and the In-House Committee I'm involved with...

There is a charity event being thrown on Monday night by NY - Internet Marketers.... we are trying to raise money for a worthy cause... tickets will be in the $50 range and include some finger food and drinks... that is one possible place to meet a bunch of people.
Also the bars are the staple... interesting that this week we start on a tuesday and end on a friday... I like that so the last night party can be a little wild!!

As usual, I've waited until the last minute to reserve a room and the Hilton is sold out.
I see that the Sheraton may have rooms open, and my usual standby, the Salisbury, has raised their rates considerably since my last visit 2 years ago.
Anyone have any suggestions for hotels within a 3 block radius of the Hilton?

The Warwick is close by.
The St Regis
The Novotel
Central Park Hotel
They are reasonably priced generally..... there is the Broadway Bed and Breakfast on 46th and 8th that is small but well priced.
The W and the Crowne Plaza are nearby but upscale prices...
The Marriott Marquis.... etc...

The St. Regis New York (http://www.starwoodhotels.com/stregis/property/overview/index.html?propertyID=81) - reasonably priced? I never thought I would see those two phrases in a sentence - ever. While a gorgeous and wonderfully historic building (founded in 1904 by John Jacob Astor - the railroad tycoon who died aboard the Titanic), the lowest I have ever gotten there was two years ago to this exact weekend at the bargain basement price of $410 per night and that was with a 50% off coupon!
The lowest I see it going for during our conference dates this year is $695 per night. If you can swing it the property is next to Trump Tower at 5th Avenue and 55th (one of New York's 5 star / 5 diamond rated hotels and one of the finest in the world) and amidst all of the shopping of 5th Avenue and a stones throw from Bergdorf Goodman (no relation to Andrew (http://www.traffick.com) - unfortunately for him) and about 3 blocks from the conference hotel.
The Sheraton New York Hotel & Towers (http://www.starwoodhotels.com/sheraton/property/overview/index.html?propertyID=421) is my favorite staple New York hotel since it is right next door to the Hilton although with the configuration of the entrance doors the walk ends up being half of a New York block (tip - enter and exit the Sheraton through the parking garage entrance and that will save you from having to walk around the building to the 7th Avenue entrance). This property is the second largest in Starwood Hotel's portfolio of 850 hotels (after Aladdin Las Vegas) so I've never seen it completely sold out although it will get tight if you wait it out. The rooms are indeed nicer than the Hilton's Rob but at a sacrifice of a few square ft. The average room size is 250 sq. ft. (slightly bigger at the Hilton but the beds are beyond compare - much nicer at The Sheraton with the Sheraton Sweet Sleeper).
If you happen to be a Starwood preferred guest, make sure to avoid the check in line downstairs and check in directly on the 44th floor where the line will be much shorter (if a line at all) and upgrades are more typically gotten from here as well. If you can - make sure to get a club floor because the club lounge on the 44th floor for continental breakfast and evening snacks is one of the best club floors in Starwood's chain. The gym has recently been renovated and while pricey, is free to Starwood elite guests and a very nice set up.
As for parties, I am compiling information from the search engines and companies who routinely have them, if you hear of any, please pass it on and I will be sure to include it in the 'Official SES New York Party and Events Schedule' to be posted within the coming weeks - be sure to check back.
See you all in New York!

I could have recommended short stay hotels.... though I did not realise they were that high... there is a Days Inn on 8th not too far away.
jimbeetle
03-17-2007, 12:01 PM
That Days Inn is now a Hilton Gardens. They've spiffed it up a bit, but it's still a Days Inn under the veneer -- and without the great rooftop pool it used to boast. The Sheraton is only a few bucks more and is a real full-service property.

The Sheraton Manhattan (http://www.starwoodhotels.com/sheraton/property/overview/index.html?propertyID=425) might also be a consideration since it is directly across the street from the Sheraton New York Hotel and Towers on 7th Avenue so it is a full block away from the Hilton. It is typically priced about $10 a night less then the Towers property and a block closer to Times Square (I see that they are now referring to this property as Sheraton Mahattan Times Square but it is still a good 6 blocks away). The Towers property is nicer and closer to the Hilton (by half a block) although the Manhattan recently underwent a badly needed upgrade of carpets and paint which may have spruced it up enough - the last time I was there visiting a friend, those two items stuck out but I havent ever stayed there. The Manahattan also has a pool if that makes a difference but no gym. You can cross the street to use the other Sheraton's facilities however if you are staying at one of them.
Another option would be the ultra swanky Le Parker Meridian New York (http://www.parkermeridien.com/index2.php) which is conveniently located 2 and 1/2 blocks away at 57th Street. The rooms are spacious, modern luxe and gorgeous although still a bit pricey but reasonable for what you get compared to similar NYC hotels.
Frank mentions The Warwick Hotel New York (http://www.warwickhotelny.com/) - which is another great option for those wanting more space and luxury but very close to the conference hotel. This hotel works because it is directly across the street from the entrance to the Sheraton at 54th St. and is a very nice property.
Loren mentions wanting to stay close so that he is within stumbling distance - however from past experience - since the hotel bar closes around midnight, most people are stumbling back from Times Square and making the 7 block journey back to the Hilton or Sheraton - if this is your case then I would recommend stayng at one of the hotels near Times Square such as the Westin Times Square (http://www.westinny.com/), The W Times Square (http://www.starwoodhotels.com/whotels/property/overview/index.html?propertyID=1234) (where many conference revelers are stumbling back from anyways since it is the location of 'The Whiskey Bar' - a favorite among conference goers), The DoubleTree Times Square (http://www.doubletree.com/en/dt/hotels/index.jhtml?ctyhocn=LGASFDT), or The Renaissance Times Square (http://marriott.com/hotels/travel/nycrt-renaissance-new-york-hotel-times-square/).

yup. lots of that goin' 'round these days.

With all respect intended my 4th estate friend... you need to figure out exactly why you are at SES before trying to pack it all into one massive experience. If you don't, you are in for a rough, tiring and likely unproductive week.
This is my umpteenth SES and it still feels like going on a four-day scavanger hunt in Disneyland. SES is dense and intense. Everybody has something to do, see, hear, sell, or talk about but they have to meet this other person over there for five minutes first. "You gonna be around in a few minutes?"
Are you attending alone or as part of a team? If you are alone, I strongly urge you to treat the week as a survey course and focus on meeting people. Go to sessions you think are immediately important. If you can't make it to a session, figure out who the speakers were and find a way to meet them. Chances are, they will be happy to speak with you if they are not already pressed for time or by other people. This is where being a bar-star is most helpful. (experts spill when drinks are free)
If you are attending as part of a team, make a plan with your team-mates and meet with them frequently through-out the day to compare notes. I think the buddy-system is best at SES events, even for advanced attendees.
Outside the sessions, beatiful, semi-structured chaos reigns. Not only are the hallways at the Hilton too narrow, the show sprawls over several floors. That's easy enough to deal with, especially in an industry made up of beautiful but semi-structured chaotic minds capable of conceptualizing on several levels at the same time. It is, if anything else, a very smart show.
For first timers who feel the need to learn as much as possible in a very short time, the session schedule is going to prove maddening. Get used to it now so it's not such a shock later. SES shows have up to five sessions running concurrently. Chances are, you will want to be in three of those five sessions at any given time. There is nothing anyone can do about that, short of taking another week off of work and spending twice as much to be there. (even then, the schedule would be packed)
Hope to make some new friends.
That is the one thing that can be practically guaranteed. You will meet some of the kindest, most interesting people at SES. It's a total treat.
There will be a number of folks from the online and traditional media there. Search Engine Watch is run by folks with both on and offline publishing backgrounds. Check out the WebmasterRadio.fm booth and drop by the press-room to meet others from the media who will probably be happy to talk with you about search and news content.
Seriously though... make sure you have realistic expectations going into the show. It is huge, chaotic and crazy even for folks who go to lots of SES events. You will not walk away an expert in search (unless you already are an expert in search) but you will walk away with your mind expanded enormously (even if you are an expert in search).
David Temple
03-27-2007, 02:46 PM
Nice overview Jim. You're absolutely right about those halls, yikes, they sure are narrow. Especially when all the sessions end at the same time.
I would add that you should plan what sessions you want to attend well in advance and find the rooms they're in, on the first day. Nothing like spending your time wandering around trying to find the next session. You can usually get a good idea about the sessions that you couldn't attend by reading about it minutes later on someone's blog.
Finally there is plenty of fun to be had and new friendships to be formed if you are not afraid to say to someone, "hi I'm (say your name here), nice to meet you." Throwing in a "Can I buy you a drink?" also goes a long way.
Chinese anyone? We can go for pizza afterwards although it won't be as adventerous as in Chicago, it sure will be a lot warmer.

EF will be having an SES after-party, details to follow. It may be small, it may be big, it may be in a random bar or it may be in a club, or it may just be in one of our suites, but it will happen - if not I will run naked across the exhibition hall.

Sounds good Frank but it would take quite a few Tsingtao's to get me to karaoke. I'd love to hear you and Chris have a go however. Let's hope shorebreak can get that party together for all our sakes. If not he'll need more than a few drinks to run the exhibit hall naked. Then again, maybe not.

I just finished finalizing my travel plans and this will be my first SES NY... so I'm excited. I've been to PubCons before and went to SES Chicago last December, but I heard NY is *the* one to attend.
I just started (well 8 weeks ago) a new gig as the chick in charge of the web stuff, and I had written into my contract that I get to attend a ton of conferences... so this should be a fun year :)

Hoping to get a good turn out of in-house SEM folks.

I will be at Ad-Tech to..... Ad-Tech in my opinion covers more than SEM/SEO related topics, it (ad-tech) speaks to web trends, web 2.0, emerging online technolgies, best practiceses, revloving around broad online advertising topics. I am kind of disaapointed that this years AD-Tech session don't reaaly cover SEO/SEM until the last sessions of the last day. I am planning on leaving before they start........

Thanks for the reply Caugus. I have been to the Ad tech's in NY, and I think they both (SES & Ad Tech) offer a lot of value, but the Ad techs can be overwhelmingly busy! At this point, I am looking at learning new trends rather than the usual unique title tags and fresh optimized content that I preach everyday.

SES is more than baisc SEO sessions... which actually is the level of coverage for Search at Ad Tech.
Both offer insights into Web 2.0 (hate the term) features but from different POVs.
Social media, community development, blogging, mulitlingual search... the list is endless.... I also think the people at SES are far more approachable and there is a tighter community...
Both are good but a newbie will get more from SES and make more contacts of true value as opposed to trading business cards from people who are going to try and sell you stuff.

Totally agree, I see AdTech as being targeted towards general Marketers, rather than specialists. There's also more of a sales pitch to it. Personally I went to one a few years back and never want to go to another.

Why do hate that term.... It kind of makes sense in my opinion. I mean when I started with the web, not long ago, 6 years ago, there was a handful of SE's, banner ad's, email, basic affilaite marketing, limited search marketing, and lexus nexus it seems like................ termed web 1.0
No there is stuff out there that I am still stubleing upon, and that actually blows my mind, social networking, deep contextual, web video, target ad, geo ad, blogs, great search technologies, forums, etc, etc, etc, is overwhelming hense web 2.0
JMO, by no means was this a Challenge AussieWebM....

As mentioned, Lolaris, but just to clarify, there was no prejudice towards in-house - simply that the SEMPO in-house committee has made it a point as these events have grown over the past couple of years to ensure a "vendor-free environment." This has worked to greatly increase the openess of the conversations, and has helped it become the event it is.
Besides, all the agency folk will be catching up on the days' work. :p
sportsguy

Thanks Chris :)
As stated above, there's no prejudice meant towards the agency folks. It's simply that the focus of the event is in-house...and experience has taught me that even though we request this up front, there are usually a couple agency folks who figure they'll sneak in and look for potential clients.
In the big picture, no biggie - can't fault a person for being enthusiastic. :D
We're just looking for an hour or two alone to chat about stuff. :)
For the record, some of my best contacts are agency folks - and I love them!
