Search Engine Traffic Volume

I am looking for any research that might address the traffic or volume that search engines have experienced when beginning a new search engine from scratch. Of course, this would depend on the level of expenditure on marketing resources and the strategy employed to gain the traffic -- but I'm hoping for any materials that might get at the kind of growth that new general-purpose search engines have experienced. Even better if scaled to marketing/promotional spending.
