This is probably a really stupid and old question that has been answered many times before, but as I don't know what they are called, I'm having difficulty finding an existing answer.

Can anyone explain what the additional pages that are displayed for some domains on Googles SERPs are called?

For example, if you search for the BBC on Google, you get the number 1 result of www.bbc.co.uk, but then beneath it (but still part of the 1st search result) 4 additional listings for "Football", "Weather Centre 5 day forecast", "Where I live local news" and "sport". I've pasted an image here to try and describe the area that I'm talking about (hope it works).

The second part of this request is how does Google determine which sites should have listings like this or is it something that can be done in order for Google to be able to list a site in this way?

I've noticed that it's not just major sites like the BBC that have these sort of results but have no idea what some sites are doing that I'm obviously not.

Thanks for any help in advance.

They are called sitelinks. Not sure of any reliable way to cause it, but it seems to depend on the way the site is structured and the authority of the site.

Thanks Robert. I've been trying to read up on this all of today and as far as I can tell, Google are keeping quite tight lipped about how they determine which sites "deserve" sitelinks.

Mr Cutts seems to mention that they are algorithmic and obviously if that's the case, they're not going to reveal how it works, so brick wall there.

There seem to be a million theories out there, such as the thread you pointed out, but again, nothing concrete.

I've also come across some webmasters that claim that Google is listing old sections on their sites, which are in no way part of their main navigation. So it would be interesting to hear Google's thoughts on how these links can be changed if you're lucky enough to get them in the first place.

I'm sure it will all come out inthe fullness of time, but for now, as long as you're doing everything else reasonably well, it looks like its just pot luck!
