I am not sure if anyone else has seen this story yet, but to me it is just another example of the big companies failing to understand how the internet works.

They are used to bully tactics and expect to get their own way.

Apologies if you have already seen this: Google Rankings Threat (http://www.seroundtable.com/archives/006927.html)

Occording to the comments on Deans blog, this is not the first time webmasters have received such threats.

As I commented at SEORoundTable there have been a bunch of this questionable but interesting posts/news items over at WMW lately.

The guy would really have to be stupid to think he had any rights to doing this.... and I mean really stupid - as in business owner one day homeless the next stupid - but a fun urban legendy story.

The same seems to be the case with the Microsoft datacenter fire.... no confirmation but good quick shot on Digg et al.

Is WMW doing viral marketing tests? Or possibly more accurately one of their posters?

Hahaha what a joke. But honestly there are folks out there who think like this, who are willing to pursue their legal options.

We had received a similar "threat" from a pseudo-competitor saying that our website copy was targeting the same keywords and phrases...

Makes you wonder if they're qualified to conduct business online.
