View Full Version : How to discover the right tags for ones posts

Hello,

I have been reading up and experimenting lately with tagging and have a few questions.

1) When tagging a piece for del.icio.us or similar site, how extensively should one tag the piece? For instance, should one include any and all possible tags that could be potentially relevant with the hope of reaching as many people as possible? That seems to make sense to me, but I wonder if users see it as "tagging spam" (if such a phrase exists).

2) How should one go about finding the best tags for one's content? I currently use technorati (which sometimes suggests related tags when one searches for a particular word or phrase) and Raw Sugar, which also suggests tags when one is uploading some content to their site. I'm wondering if anyone knows of any other ways to find relevant tags. More importantly, has anyone developed a system of how to best use/find tags? Should we be doing tag research similar to how we do keyword research, trying to find which tags our target market uses when searching on sites such as technorati and del.icio.us, or is that a waste of time? How do people go about deciding which tags to use for their posts? Any thoughts, ideas, suggestions out there?

All the best,

Moshe
