I just wanted to poll the collective knowledge on this board about this question. I have heard many things about this including search engines use the directories and it builds links.

Can someone help me get a better answer? How do search engines use these directories? Which ones are the most popular? And, most importantly, how do you get links from the directories?

I read this on another blog "A good SEO should be able to obtain between 75-150 unique backlinks just from directories." IS this true? And, if so, how does one go about getting backlinks from directories?

I thank you in advance for your answers.

In the free listings for the search engines, one of the important criteria thats considered is, the site getting listed in good directories.
Out of my experience, gone the days of having links from multiple directories. I feel there are only 2 directories that are to be considered. Dmoz and yahoo dir.
rest all is a scrap.

In the last year, a high number of new directories have emerged.

Listing your site in one of these is highly questionable.

Like any other type of website, there are good directories and bad ones. When I evaluate a directory, I look at everything from the age (a.k.a. proof of survival) to the price for submission.

Once in a while, I'll find a real gem. For instance, I have one of my sites listed on a PR6 directory page with only 8 other links. Even better, it's a 6-year-old niche directory that's relevant to website's topic. In my mind, this is the "brass ring" of directory placement.

I don't think I would waste my time submitting to a directory that's less than 2 yrs. old. Many of them get themselves banned from Google for over-aggressive SEO tactics. That's why age is so important to me.

Take care.

Niche and vertical directories are hidden treasures. Just takes a lot of work to find the good ones!

What does vertical mean, btw? I assume its the same thing as when you look at a generic topic, but try to find a niche in it...would that be a niche/vertical of the more generic topic..?

The original paper on trustrank (a great weekend read btw :D ) talks about the need for authorative seeds with many external links.

Respected directories such as Dmoz obviously fit this bill due to their rigerous review processes. So if Dmoz is a seed, a link from Dmoz should carry a lot of weight.

This is the main reason for submitting to the big dogs. As mentioned previously, submission to the lesser directories is all about 1 way backlinks.

Should be more than that :)
