Today, Google announced 2 music deals:

1. Sony Music - for video and streaming music (http://www.google.com/intl/en/press/pressrel/google_sonybmg.html)
2. Warner Music Group - also for video and streaming music (http://www.google.com/intl/en/press/pressrel/google_wmg.html)

The intent apparently is to monetize the music offerings through AdSense - Fansites can put AdSense on their site, then visitors would click on the ads to get the song/video, and then Google, Sony/WMG and the site owner would share the revenue. Interesting.

SONY BMG MUSIC ENTERTAINMENT and Google will also work together to create a groundbreaking new service that will allow music fans to access user-created music video content featuring certain material from SONY BMG MUSIC ENTERTAINMENT's library of recorded music, while at the same time respecting the rights of artists and copyright holders.


I vaguely remember hearing something about someone's deal somewhere that would allow users to use downloaded music on their own online video soundtracks. Is this it, or in reaction to it?

...Besides providing ad-supported content on Google Video, select WMG's music videos will immediately be available for purchase as downloads on Google Video for $1.99.
