Is there a way or a tool out there which would allow me to check how many backlinks a web site had from Google, Yahoo or MSN several months back?

Not that I am aware of. We just collect data for sites and then archive it manually so we can compare over time. An interesting service for someone to offer but it would probably have to be some kind of subscription based services as I don't see some kind of automatic program that collects historical link data for every site on the web. That would be quite a task indeed!
