Hi Guys,

Can you tell me please if Yahoo is classed as a directory search engine??

Also which other search engines are classed as directories??

I heard that text links at the bottom of your website is good for ranking in directory websites.

Is this true??

Cheers
Andy

Hi Andy.

Yahoo has both a directory (http://dir.yahoo.com/), and a crawler-based search engine (http://search.yahoo.com/).

The other major SE's have smaller or mirrored directories, but are mostly known for their Search Engine, not the directory.

Not sure if I can comment on your last question other than to say that statement seems pretty dubious.

Many thanks for you reply Chris. :)

So even though Yahoo is a directory it still uses robots as it were to rank a page.

So do you think that domain names does not help your internet position?

Thanks

Andy

the domain name thing comes up fairly frequently, take a look at the past threads in this area and you should find some good discussions. Having a keyword in the domain name is but one small factor in ranking for search engines (used to be a bigger factor, and still can be if the search is long-tailed and all the words used are in the URL). However I would think that it is possible to rank higher in a directory for a brand or keyword if it is in the domain. Not sure on that though, and each directory is different.
