I had this site whic is now about 9 months old ... initially i.e. after 9 months it started showing up for one of the main KW on the 3rd page and for all other keywords they were still no where  ... and then after a few days I saw that it started rankinng on 1st and 2nd for quite a few KWs so obviously I was all excited :D but it stayed there for a day or so and then disappeared again  , this time its not even on the 3rd page ... so now my question is wheter this is normal when the site is coming out of sandbox or this is some thign I should be worry about ... thanks

Have you checked you positions on different datacentres? It could well be out of the sandbox on some while not on others. It usually takes changes a while to propagate across all DCs.

The days when sites suddenly graduate from the so-called sandbox are pretty much over. Since late last year we have been seeing more of a gradual release and it happens kw by kw. Like MattUK said, there is still a lot of "dance" across the datacenters with erratic propagation, but also, even within a specific dc the situation can fluctuate.

I have experienced similar phenomina (is that even a word ???) many times, where a clients rankings would appear out of the blue then vanish a few days later. The first couple I would ring the client and show them but know I wait a few weeks before reporting any good news to make sure its not a blip.
Keep battling away and one day those rankings will be solid and consistant (at least until the next big update which I am going to call fuzznumfph (c) SEOMalc 2006)
Good luck and have a great weekend

Thanks .. so far it seems to be dropping even further  ... but this is only for 1 Keyword, it doesnot show up for any other KW at all atleast not in top 100 ... and when it was up there :) for a little while it was there for all the keywords not just one ... as for the other datacenters, its the same result for all i.e. its no where on any other dataacenter :( ... so I guess I will stay put and see if I see any results

I have a relevent question on this subject.
I am woking on a site for a client and no-matter what we do the site is stuck on page 4 but when i took it over the web guys had put it in a directory which was basicly duplicating the page and both pages were ranked.
I removed the duplicated content added inward links tweeked the pages but the damn thing wont move
Is this because Google has sandboxed the site and is waiting or what my client now tops msn and Yahoo but google wont move so im sure the site is being punished.
Any ideas before i take up banking ;)

Banking is good ;-) But first see if the allin search produces somewhat similar resuts as a regular search for these kws.

Sorry if my reply was cryptic, I was referring to an allinanchor: search for the keywords.

John,
Firstly thankyou for your help thus far.
I have a good number of inward links with keywords in the anchor text but Google doesnt list them all and i have found by even tweeking on the page data the site doesnt move when with every other site i work on this would effect placement?
This site is really confusing me as i have never had Google react like this to a site before which is why i feel it is being sandboxed for the terms we are gunning for.
Like i said we top yahoo and msn for all the terms we have been going for but Google wont move.
Is it posible that they are holding it in the sandbox because of the duplicated content from before i was on the scene?

Well you didn't really answer the question, but to move on - yes it is possible that the site could be under some type of a cloud due to problems you mention.

I tried "allinanchor:keyword" the results are pretty much the same except that with "allinanchor:" my site is #20 and with standard search its #45 ... what should I make out of that ... thanks for your help

>with "allinanchor:" my site is #20 and with standard search its #45
That is usually a signal that something is holding the site back... either there is poor relevance or content on page, a penalty, or it could be the so-called sandbox. How old is the site?

This happen to me. I tried out another contextual text ad at the bottom of Google Ads. Having not aware of violation of TOS on Google Ads, my rankings slip away from top rankings. Now, it starting to crawl up. However, my rankings did not fully recover enough yet.

Its a relatively new site - 8 months - and the ranking were among the top pages for a day or 2 before it went all the way down ... and whats a TOS?

>with "allinanchor:" my site is #20 and with standard search its #45

Hi All,
I'm new to Search Engine Watch and to the seo world. I have really liked this forum and wanted to share what I believe about the sandbox.
I believe webkidsan that instead of endlessly waiting for the search engine to give ranking to the website, it is good to start working on the OFF Page factors of the website.
Try making more "Quality" links and increase "Relevant" traffic to the website. I believe the only way of taking out the website off the sandbox is by gradually increasing traffic to the website, which builds a kind of trust with the search engine for the usefullness of the website content and the website starts getting favourite with the search engine and it "MIGHT" fasten the ranking process.
So, with this plan you can resell your services to the client
