I'm the sole technical employee for a small company. They want me to optimize the site for search engines. It seems that there are tons of software options out there.

I'm looking for key word help - Is wordtracker.com any good? Are there others that are better?

Also looking for software - WebPosition seems to be the most popular, but is it any good? Are there better options available?

Thanks

Wordtracker is great for keyword research as is the overture keyword tool. Wordtracker is better at finding lateral terms though.

For ranking software I have used the software from simplifiedsec.com

I don't use the cloaking portion of it, but it has some other valuable tools packaged with it.

No offense to word tracker but between Google, Overture/Yahoo and other offering help with keywords like 7Search, I frankly don't see why one would spend the kind of $$ they want.

Otherwise, if you like your "own" sdolution, there are some options that are very innexpensive. For example check out searchenginepromotiontools.com. I used them for a while when I ran a limited number of sites but then it became expensive when I reached a certain level. Also their Customer Service is iffy at best so be aware.

Good luck.

Hands down, my new favorite keyword research tool is Keyword Discovery.

Much easier to use than Wordtracker. Also, they get their data from ISPs, instead of smaller engines. This means that Keyword Discovery has data from Google, Yahoo and MSN. Whereas Wordtracker does not.

Just checked it out. Excellent looking tool. I've got to try it more in depth but if they deliver what they claim to have then it is a winner.

Thanks for the tip.

use as many tool as you can, though it doesnt really matter in the end as the topy 20-30 keywords will be sme irresepective of what you use.

We have a word tracker account and use it often.

Ya - Get your hands on as many tools as you can. Every tool has a skew, you just need to understand where the skew is, and use other tools to help fill in those gaps. Most tools are limited by the data source, whether its meta data or geo based (isp) limitations. You can go with lightweight wordtracker and keyworddiscovery, or move up to the higher $$ hitwise service, but your budget will dictate that move.
