Something is really bugging me.

I have a keyword that is quite specialised and therefore doesn't have much competition.

Therefore, I would like any search using 'myword' to bring up my adword.

Looking around I can see that a search such as: "usability asdfasdfasfd"
will bring up ads for some companies for usability. So, it appears that there is a rule that as long as the word 'usability' is used their ad will show up.

(Now, my keyword is not usability). Though when I search on "myword adsfadfsa" my ad does not come up.

Can someone tell me how I can do this?

Yes - use keyword phrase matching or exact matching. That is specify your keywords thus:

"keyword"
[keyword]

Broad match, which is what you are using now, looks like this:

keyword

I've had this happen too, and I think I've figured out why.

Basically, if you type in "yourword lkah9i38" or something similar, your ad will eventually show up, but sometimes not even one in ten times. If, however, the keyword "yourword" (broad-matched) has been performing very well in your campaign, it will show up for more variations. With broad-matched terms, Google determines which ads will show based on relevancy, and obviously "lkah9i38" isn't relevant to anything. So I'm not sure exactly why your ads don't show every time for it, but I think it has something to do with relevancy and keyword performance.
