*Updated - 08/01/2006*
Due to the size that SES is now growing to and as we've started to see occuring from the SES New York 2005 party scene (http://forums.searchenginewatch.com/showthread.php?t=9912) there are now a rash of 'private parties' that are invite only to a particular company's set of clients, vendors and partners. Therefore, the best advice I can offer is to contact all of your vendors and hit them up to see if they are sponsoring any events this year.
Sunday Night August 6
Marriott Bar
Downstairs to right of reception at Marriott is usually the place to be.
One known private party.
Monday Night August 7
FIVE known private parties.
Tuesday Night August 8
Google's GoogleDance V (http://www.google.com)
7:00 - 11:00 p.m.
Come party the night away at the Google Dance at SES San Jose.
Can you believe that it´s the fifth annual Google Dance? We host this event every year to show you, the loyal SES attendee, our appreciation. The theme for the event is "Google Labs," so bring your lab coat if you have one and stop by for goodies, great food and drinks. You´ll get into the swing of things in Club G, where you´ll be able to listen to cool sounds coming from our own Google DJ´s, as well as enjoy some live music. We think you´ll have fun in the Google Labs technology playground area, where you´ll be able to meet people who work on our products, and test drive our latest creations. If you´re lucky, you may even get to play with a robot or two.
Location: Google Headquarters
1600 Amphitheatre Parkway

The one last year w/ The Dan Band (www.thedanband.com) was awsome. Best event of the week. I had never heard of them before, but had a great time.
No Yahoo trip to the amusement park either?
I awoke after last years' Google Dance to find myself naked as a jaybird with one earring in, draped sideways across my hotel bed that I had evidently pulled not only the sheets but the mattress covers off of too. Good band.
I love SES.

The bar at the Marriott is the official SES hanging out bar - followed by the bar at the Hilton, but more people usually congregate at the Marriott. Any time there is not a party, or as a break from the sessions, or for impromptu meetings, and after the parties let out...you will find a group of SES'ers there at the bar.
They also have a really good breakfast buffett there.

This is my first SES Conference and was wondering how most people dressed. I don't want to be the only one in shorts and flip-flops :) . Also, I guess the Google Dance is probably slacks and a polo? Thx!
This is my first SES Conference and was wondering how most people dressed.
At SES you have everything from jeans and rock tees to suits and ties to full on bright orange getups. I think we'd all just want you to just be yourself and wear what you wear. Even if you're into tube tops and flesh colored tights, we take 'em all.
And I believe I heard something abuot wearing a lab coat for the Google Dance?
Robert_Charlton
07-27-2006, 03:29 PM
To repeat my annual climate warning, bring some sort of jacket or windbreaker for the Google Dance. It's outside and can be subject to the cooling effects of wind and coastal fog, particularly after the sun goes down. As Mark Twain said, "The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco." Mountain View, which is where the GooglePlex is located, is further south than San Francisco, but when the fog does come over those hills, look out!
It's a bit of a logistical problem, though, as it's a drag to carry a warm jacket around on a hot day. For the Google Dance, I'll probably carry a fleece jacket in a shoulder bag, just in case. Good for carrying Google swag too.
And then there's that unpredictable air conditioning inside the conference. ;)

For Chicago I did the suit and tie thing, and felt a bit over-dressed, so for New York I did the jeans and shirt thing and felt a bit under-dressed. This time I'll stick with jeans.
Yep, the Google Dance asked you to wear a lab coat if you have one.
I believe that I did hear that Danny will be wearing Lederhosen to one session in San Jose...

That is the biggest secret about SEO.... you need a certain tolernace to alcohol... or the ability to remember beyond it... that or just mark the business cards you get with notes on the back so you know who to keep in touch with!

I was just reading Kevin Lee's article on ClickZ.com (http://www.clickz.com/showPage.html?page=3623061) about SES, and he says this regarding the Google Dance:Google will once again host its Google Dance party. All you need is an SES badge and an RSVP confirmation printout to get in (I think even the free exhibit hall badges work). Anyone know if that's true -- about just needing a free exhibit hall badge?

Just a quick update regarding the Sunday night private party Joe mentioned in his original post...
It's being hosted by a client of mine. It was originally scheduled to be a "Speakers Only" event, but there are many speakers who are arriving later in the week, so it looks like we'll have some room for a few more people.
If anyone here will be attending the show, and in town on Sunday, let me know and I'll forward you the invite/rsvp info.

Anyway, my ratings for the SES Parties:
Sunday BoDog: "A" great idea to have a speaker party before we get started. Hope it becomes a regular event.
Monday: Allan Dick/Hitwise: "A" Hanoke Gardens beautiful place. Great group of folks.
Tuesday: Google Dance: "B+" For some reason it just wasn't the same this year. can't put my finger on it.
Wednesday: Search bash: "A++" How search parties seem to be meant to be. Would have been "A+++" if the back bar had been opened. :p

Sorry for the people at the Bodog party who I kept winning at Texas Hold 'Em against. Never really played before, so it was either beginners luck or my poker/confused face. Great party and the best freebie of SES (shame they wouldn't give me the poker table though ;))
I went to the Ask.com party on Monday instead of the Hitwise event, think that was A+ as I couldn't remember what happened until half way through Google Dance :D I hope that camera's were banned. Some people may have trouble explaining to their wives why there are photos of waitresses standing on the bar in short mini-skirts pouring bottles of tequilla and vodka down certain people's throats. ;)
I also have to commend Megan and the girls at Trexy for a superb pre-SEARCHBASH pub crawl.

Funny I stopped by that party briefly Wednesday night.... the Go-Go dancers were not there yet... the year prior the guys from Best of the Web and I were throwing $20 bills at them.... and Matt of FindMeFaster (we had been on a panel together last year) was manning the back bar - an impromtu thing when I said he needed to get a little wild - he was there for well over an hour when a real bartender came by asking what he was doing - Matt gave the guy the money from the tip jar we had put up and he seemed appeased... pity I flew out Wednesday night and could not stay later...
