Does anyone know the rules to show ads in the "Refine Results" pages? My ads show for all appropriate keywords on a direct search, but not on a Refine Results search. Anyone know the display rules here?
(Refine Results links appear at the top of the organics for some classes of keywords, especially medical conditions. To see an example try a search on asthma)

I have not used this but I imagine you would be looking at the secondary search term - advertise for it and you should be in those listings... but it still highlights the original term in the actual new ads.

That's what I thought, so it was the first thing I tried, but with no success. Clearly some other algo is at work here.

Okay I tracked this down finally...

http://www.google.com/coop

This is where this can be done. As the above link suggests it is co-op advertising... though that is not quite my definition of the term.

Yes, I looked at Coop a while back. It does indeed seem to drive ranking on Refine Results SRPs, allowing some level of user contribution to "page popularity". But, from my understanding it effects only the Organic rank of Refine Results, I can't seem to get any handle on Ad rank for Refine Results. Basically, the way that Refine Results SRPs are put together is still a mystery, at least to me!

The answer to your question is a tricky one that I think I have finally been able to establish in a conversation with our New York team. In order to appear within the paid results on the refined pages of a search, you have to be bidding with broad match on the keyword (let’s say “Crestor”) AND the refinement (let’s say “Patients”). An example would be crestorfacts.com, which appears in paid for the refined result “for patients” since they bid on “Crestor patients” with broad match. http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&rls=GGLJ,GGLJ:2006-33,GGLJ:en&q=crestor+more:for_patients&cx=drugs_for_patients&sa=N&oi=cooptsr&resnum=0&ct=col3&cd=1

Also, from Philly: We have found that having an expanding keyword list around the refinements works well.

For example, search on migraine and click "treatment", "symptoms", "tests" and "causes". You will see our (client) listing show up for all of these because we have an extensive keyword list that covers these topics.

This is a very important point, and shows that Google has found a way to get some marketers to increase their use of broad match terms to include all the possible refinements.

I hope that AdSense person comes by with a "for sure" response...
