I am currently trying to optimize my company's website for search engines. I have done thorough research and have added title, description, and keyword tags as well as did my best to add keywords to our website copy. We still aren't doing that great in the search engine results, unless the searchers phrase is VERY specific to what we do. Can someone tell me what the next step is?

Hi Alikatt,

Welcome to the forums. :)

The next step after optimizing your pages for search engines would be to work on your link building campaign.

The more competitive the keyword phrases you are targeting, the more links you need to your site with those keyword phrases in the anchor text.

I would recommend reviewing the link building forum (http://forums.searchenginewatch.com/forumdisplay.php?f=44) here. There are two particular threads I think is worth reading; Slickest Link Building Tricks (http://forums.searchenginewatch.com/showthread.php?t=1131) and One-Way Link Building (http://forums.searchenginewatch.com/showthread.php?t=22).

Good Luck!

Thank you so much for your help.

After doing some research I think I have a little more that may need to be done on the optimization part. I am a little stuck on the keywords as wel. The keywords I have now are what I guess you would call "non-competitive"? Meaning they are pretty specific. However, using a keyword like "antispam software" would never get us in the top of the rankings no matter how good our site is because there are so many other sites out there for that as well. Any advice?

You may be able to add a few words to the phrase "antispam software", such as "discount antispam software", that type of idea. Look for secondary versions of your competitive keyword phrase like the example above. Be sure to check out what the top competitors and secondary competitors are doing in your topic. Take a look at their keywords and the variety of phrases they use, you may pick up a phrase you missed along the way.
