hi rockart,
aaron wall's SEO Book (www.seobook.com) is a great resource. it gives a good industry overview, with the opportunity to dive deeper into specific areas as your knowledge increases.
a good next step, if you want to more technical information on term vector theory, how search engines work, etc, is mike grehan's book (www.search-engine-book.co.uk). it's got heaps of useful information, but might be information overload if you're just starting off.
on the off chance mike sees this post, i've gotta ask - when will we see the third edition? :)

Hello Rockart,
Aaron's SEO Book is a good one. He updates it as well, which is an advantage of an ebook.
Chris Sherman reviewed a good basic SEO book recently, "Search Engine Optimization - An Hour A Day (http://searchenginewatch.com/searchday/article.php/3618296) " that may be worth checking out.

The Search Enging Marketing Kit (http://www.sitepoint.com/books/sem1/) by Dan Thies also seems to be very popular (probably the biggest competitor to Aaron's book).
Here is what Aaron posted about Dan's publication:

Don't forget Search Engine Marketing Inc by Bill Hunt and Mike Moran. IMO, it's one of the best out there (and it's a real book, you know, with paper and everything...)
Mike Grehan has an e-book called the Search Engine Marketing Book that I like a lot, too.
BTW, Chris Anderson (who wrote the original Wired article on the "Long Tail") just came out with a new book a couple of weeks ago called (obviously) "The Long Tail: Why the Future of Business is Selling Less of More" (ISBN: 1-4013-0237-8)
It's amazing. I'm reading it a second time already and taking notes on the ideas it's giving me. Highly recommended.
