Hello. We all hear every guru on the planet say that you got to have good incoming links to your sites to be successful. Are they still in touch with reality or did all the success they've achieved make them loose focus already? I mean it's so easy for them to say this because they're already in a position where a ton of people are voluntarily linking to them. What about the average joe? I'm sure you know how difficult it is to secure decent incoming links. I mean why would a site with decent incoming links let alone high PR even bother to link with low let alone 0 PR sites? I'm guessing the answer to this question of mine would be "eventually you will get decent incoming links but not right away and while waiting you have to write lots of quality articles and then wait a little more, write more articles and wait a little more and more and more and more..." Thank you so much in advance. Cheers. :)

Hi,
I totally agree with what you are saying - I work with many SMEs in Italy and they all share the same kind of problem. Nobody knows them, nobody cares about them and to be quite honest they really don't have all that much to say about themselves or their products, especially if they are dealing in Ecommerce or are a small hotel in the province.
In my experience the best way is to invest in directory submissions. There are many of them and they are affordable. They'll provide you with a quality link and traffic. It's a good starting point. At the same time you'll want to enrich your site with some copy and wait for time to do the rest.
I find myself telling many of my Clients they should start to think of search engines as a traditional media - top 10 listing for very competitive keywords cannot be achieved over night or without an adequate budget.

Hello, well this is not necessary true, you can acquire good links even having pr 0, I started a blog recently and so far I got some good links from pages with 4 and 5 pr because the people I asked for a link visited my site and they belive it was worth the link. But sure not everyone will do it, got some emails from webmasters that says well your site is pretty good please ask me again when you have a higher pr, so it's not a sure victory but it can happen.
Also you might want to check for links that you can buy, I'm about to buy a link from a website with 6 of pr it's going to be expensive but it's worth it.
If you are writting good content you might want to consider submitting new articles to some blogs or webs with related content they will publish it and they will also publish your name and website and those are great links, because you will not only get some rank but also good traffic.
Hope this helps =)

I believe it makes a big differnce if we are talking about blogs or a traditional web site. A blog will survive only if updated often and talks about interesting things - otherwise you are dead.
The situation is more difficult and I relate to the original post when we are talking about a more traditional web site - like I said if you run a small hotel in the province you really don't have that much to write about that will motivate others to link you, therefore you'll want to invest in directory registration IMO.

Takin your example about a hotel, you might write a guide for the people who stays there what can they see in your location, interesting places, restaurants, bars, traditions, etc. you can make a tourists guide for the people who will stay at your hotel, in that way you will build good content and get some good links
Also you can write a blog for your hotel and tell news from your location, etc. there's always a way to create good content for a site
Hope this helps :)

Remember, for every average joe like you there are a thousand others. That small hotel? Crosslink with the small hotel 20km away... and the cafe down the street... and landmark church that everyone comes to that town to see.
You are right: chasing PR6 links is like chasing a bus that already left. So stop chasing buses :)

If your content is interesting, many will link to you and in that regard, you kinda disregard PageRank. This can be achieved after a considerable amount of time developing good quality content. The problem we see is that a lot of people always think of quick fix methods and whine if their sites don't perform well in the short run. Stop whining, focus less on rankings and traffic, focus more on how you can entertain your audience.

After you write something good, unique or else, you need to promote it yourselft first, because nobody knows about it. Promote it, ask for link, call for links...
