Question for those of you who make your living off of your websites. How and where do you purchase your health insurance. How much does it cost for a family?

Hi There,

Typically you'd find a variable set of answers for a question like this, not only does it vary for individuals, but state to state.

That said, I'm probably one of the few people who can actually give you a good answer. I currently use IHC/Select Health (or whatever it was they just rebranded to) here in SLC.

it's really a fantastic option -coverage is great and really affordable as an individual, and probably not bad as a family, (but I couldn't tell you that for sure.)

thanks Elisabeth, that is great advice. I am currently on IHC with my day job, so that would be an easy transition.

Any other advice, even outside of the state or country is appreciated. It is helpful just to see a wide variety of what options people have available to them in different areas.

Hey vayapues. I actually started Search Engine Marketing while in the Health insurance business. There are many sites out there that will give you accurate quick quotes without making you wait, and even compare plans. Although you may be looking at an individual/family plan, there is such a thing as a "group of one." You could also put someone else ( a family member or friend even) on the payroll, and get group rates that way. With Individual plans, you will be at the mercy of the underwriters in terms of pre-existing conditions. Group plans by law cannot exclude you on that basis alone, but health individual plans can. Spend some time and talk to a licensed agent...they won’t charge you any more as they get paid by the insurance companies.

I want to clarify that this is in no way meant to be a professional guidance. I think my CA License is expired now anyway. :p

(***added: note how I resisted the urge to drop a link to my buddy's site? :) )

For my family, Blue Cross/Blue Shield PPO w/ $2500 deductible per person, $5,000 per family. Premium is $428/mo. and that is with me, wife and two kids on plan.

It is more of a catastrophic insurance plan because we don't go to the doctor that much. It does have co-insurance however which allows co-pays on doctor visits and discounted prescriptions.

What is cool about BC/BS is that when they raise rates, they raise them across the board. In other words if you have to use your insurance, you don't get dinged individually.

I have a separate Dental Plan under United Health that runs under my company. Cost is around $88 a month per family.
