I've been analysing the google's top 10 results (www.google.com) for the keyphrase Algarve car hire - organic results.

I can figure out some optimization techniques in these pages, but.. there's one page (http://www.amoita.com/index.php) that I don't understand why google ranks it # 1 much of the time.

I noticed that:

- on the page optimization:
I see that this page doesn't have the keywords in the body text, they only were added in the meta tags: description, content and title tag.

-off the page optimization
there are 6 backlinks to the home page (one of these links is from dmoz directory).

Is this page hidden something from the humans? I mean, if a page has no content at all related to the keywords that we are searching for how can google rank most of the time this page #1???

Thank you all for the help

Well this page was first published in Nov. 1998, back then it have on it's title and first words algarve car hire algarve car hire algarve car hire algarve car hire algarve car hire algarve car hire algarve car hire algarve car hire, i know it looks bad but maybe back then wasn't "ilegal" anyway the only reason of the age of this website make it a "trusted source" for google, the dmoz link is a good boost also it have the yahoo directory link and some others.

There are a lot of examples like this of webpages who became "trusted sources" for google and rank well despite they no longer have the keywords ond it's page, in fact i have seen pages with no content at all that rank on 1st, 2nd or 3rd page for important keywords! just in Google

To check the first publish well.... kind of is by this link http://web.archive.org/web/19981111190226/http://www.amoita.com/ you can see other versions of this web at http://web.archive.org/web/*/www.amoita.com but as this is a cache of the website it won't look good anymore since it doesn't save the images/flash, etc.

How that particular page can mantain a position with no keywords on the page (H tags, bold text, etc, etc)? I mean is google just looking to the text in the backlnks (anchor text) to that page? Or text in the page is no longer important for google?

Many thanks
