Subdomains are somewhat treated as seperate domains. Do the links pointing to the main domain be counted for the subdomains? OR Do I have build seperate link exchanges for the subdomains??

As a search engine would see the sub-domain as a separate domain, the same would apply for links pointing to main domain. They would not provide any benefit to the sub domain.

*Do I have build seperate link exchanges for the subdomains?*

Definitely, and resist the temptation to overly interlink the subs....

Thanks.

Well, it looks like creating a seperate directory instead of subdomain might involve less work in terms of linking and promoting...

And usually less risk ;-)

Unless risk and experimentation is what you're looking for ;) Subdomains are a great way of doing some testing sometimes.

There is little or no different between ranking for a keyword on a subdomain home page and a page on the main domain. Some Search Engines have been reported to give more weight to for the keyword in the URL if it is a subdomain vs. a file name.

For the most part if you want to rank for a keyword on a sub-domain home page or a page off the main domain in either case you will need to point links at that page.

The authoritive weight your website has will be taken into consideration where your are trying to rank for a keyword on a sub-domain or a file off the main domain.

David are you saying that all the links pointed to the main domain of a site will pass weight to a new page on the main domain but not a new sub-domain page.

It’s not clear to me what you are saying do to the fact the question is not completely clear.

Do you think it is going to be easier to rank for a keyword on a page off the main domain than it is for a sub-domain home page? And are you saying there is no authoritive weight passed from the main domain to the sub-domain page what will help the sub-domain page rank?

What would you consider "overly interlinked"? We converted one of our sites from using subdirectories to subdomains (about 50 subdomains). The navigation on every page has a css drop-down menu of all the categories/subdomains. Do you think this is too much interlinking? Would you suggest moving back to subdirectories?

Thanks for any advice.
