Hi
From experience in submitting to search engines I am of the opinion that it is best to let the search engines find the webpages with it's regular crawls.
Auto submission software was never a favourite and my websites did well without auto submitting.
I was wondering with RSS feeds does the same principle apply?
TIA

You're right, there's no need to submit your website to the search engines anymore. But, with RSS and blogs, it's different.
I was wondering with RSS feeds does the same principle apply?
No, the same principle doesn't apply. With an RSS feed it's acceptable to send a ping to sites that will accept them.

Since RSS is so new and growing, getting in the directories by submitting is probably the only way to get picked up and listed. The RSS engines are not sophisticated enough to spider on their own, with the exception of Technorati http://www.technorati.com.
You may want to try RSS Submit by ksoft http://www.dummysoftware.com/rsssubmit.html

Google Blog search finds new feeds just fine, without submitting.
The Ksoft submit tool is handy as is Robin Good's list of blog directories for those that have the time and patience for manual submissions.

Some rss directories have automaic inclusions, so here's no point to submit manually to those but some have human editors..
here's a good list for you to submit to:

The simplest, fastest, and cheapest way to submit your rss feed is to use pingoat.com which is free. Takes a whole 30 seconds.
MSN only crawls feeds from moreover.com, google crawls several major blog aggregators, and pingoat updates yahoo when you use it. After that the content of your blog will be available on some sites immediately while on others it'll be available in 5 hours or less.
The key to getting maximum traffic is to make sure that the search engines and rss aggregators are updated immediately after each post. To do that you either have to use pingoat right after you update OR sign up for an account at feedburner.com and set feedburner up to ping those services for you. Make sure to install the little orange feed button feedurner supplies you with. Feedburner feeds are readable by both rss and atom readers and it tracks the number of subscribers to that feed.

Dyre42 is right, Feedburner can be an effective tool for promoting and tracking basic information about your RSS feed.
I would recommend that you use their domain mapping service so that the feed url uses your domain name, (www.yourdomainname.com/rss/) rather than the default (feeds.feedburner.com/yourrssfeed). That way you have more control in case something happens with the Feedburner service or if you choose to change how you manage your RSS feed.
Also, the organge RSS button is a good idea, but many people still don't know what that means. Be sure to use the text "Subscribe" near that button.
It is particularly effective to create a static subscription page and list links to all the major RSS readers/aggregators there with the RSS feed embedded. There's a handy tool for automatically creating these links over on our blog tools (http://www.toprankresults.com/tools/) page called "Feed Subscription Button Maker".

It is best to ping the blog directories.
If you are using something like wordpress than you can save the sites in the option so that you can ping them after each post.
I would recommend Rss submitter from http://www.jvwinc.com/rss-solution-package.html
