Being a newbie, I am just starting with directory and search engine submission. My question is , don't the engines and directories have a way to tell manual from automatic submission? Is there any value to auto submission software?

To me, submission through automated submission software is a little similar to SQL injection where search engine directories may be able to detect from a manual submission in terms of the time spent in a site filling up the form from the automated one where pre-defined items are submitted on the fly. Although software can also emulate delays in submission to mimic human submissions, I think it's not difficult for search engines to detect which is automated and which is manual.

If sites do have verification tools such as captcha (pls enter the code in the text box), then only manual submissions can pass through it and will render the automated software useless.

I'd recommend not to use automated software esp if you are unsure what you are doing.

Hi jedidr,

don't the engines and directories have a way to tell manual from automatic submission?

Not only do many of them have background processes in place to decide whether a submission is automated or manual, many also openly add an image verification field on their submission page to tell humans from bots.

My best guess is that search engines queue undiscovered sites as follows:
1. Found 1 or more links to the new site on a 3rd party website
2. Site submitted manually and ethically
3. Site submitted by software ethically

The fact is that there are less then half a dozen major engines which can bring you traffic and maybe 10-15 regional or niche engines for your market. You need to ask yourself - Is my website worth an hour of my time to submit it to search engines manually? If not, there's little point in starting the site and if it is, you'll be able to sleep happily in knowing that you haven't cut corners or risked your business.

I gather that you also know that there is no benefit in re-submitting your website unless it no longer lists in the search engine. Search Engines like Google will return to your website regularly anyway, and constantly re-submitting your site will either have no effect or a negative effect to your SEO strategy.

Is there any value to auto submission software?

None that I can think of, the paid solutions rely on unexperienced people thinking that the process is hard. Although there's a little value in SEO software which checks page rankings via an API, you'll benefit a lot more and learn a lot more by doing things yourself.

Thanks for the information. I am submitting to a number of directories for linking purposes.(Not reciprocal) It is time consuming, and I don't mind doing it, just thought that automatic my be easier. But if it screws things up, i will stick to manual.

I think you've made the best choice, and remember that not all directories are created equal. When you visit a directory, check the Page Rank and ask yourself "Would I use this directory if I stumbled across it?". Although 1000+ inbound links in nice, 50 links from repected sources is smashing :D
