Usability guru Jakob Nielsen attempts to answer the question, "How can sites cope with masses of freeloaders?"
I'm very pleased to see that he mentions Ask Jeeves attempt to place answers directly on serps and calls it interesting. I agree. I recently wrote about this for SearchDay. (http://searchenginewatch.com/searchday/article.php/3370751)
The article includes several tips. I think calling people who use the web to only answer research and reference type questions and not for commercial use "freeloaders" is a bit strong.
