Has any been really succesful with they're natural listings on google compared to all the other major S.E's?
SamBenson,
"Success" is a subjective term IMO. My definition of sucess may not be the same as your's or others.
I have been able to get placed on at least page 3 or higher over long periods of time for my ultra-competitive industry keywords. Since most people don't go beyond three pages of searches, I know that I can at least be seen, which is a good thing. No adwords campaigns, no banner ads, no other advertising. Just natural listings. I consider that a success of sorts.
I will say that it is tough to do and it takes time. My main competitor doesn't use banner ads or adwords either and they get even higher than me, usually page 1. They do have a lot of spammy inbound links which I think are helping them. And as has been mentioned in a different thread recently, link farms may have some advantages after all. But I choose to stay clear of those.
Hope that helps.

We've had some good results with natural listings on google, havent hit the 1st position yet tho, have had 1st on Ask.com and Yahoo a few times,
And i dont blame you for steering clear of the Link Farms!! ;)

i wonder, what is your take on getting up on google first 3 pages is? say for a site which is optimizing for a keyphrase that has 20 million others competing for it.
domain age
pages of unique copy
backlinks
also what kind of keyword compeition falls under competitive or highly competitive?

I can't speak for everyone, but I would say for a site that has a keyword that 20 million others competing for it, the first 3 pages of any search engine looks real good. Page one is the goal, and it can be achieved. But takes time and it's not easy. Especially when you consider the effects that a lot of people seem to be feeling from the latest Google update. It either benefits you greatly, or causes ulcers. :(
My industry is "background checks" and "pre-employment screening". Those keywords are the lifeforce of our industry. Our site has been up for about 8 years now and we have many pages of unique content as well as many quality backlinks. The exact number is unknown for sure, but a certain tool I use suggests that we have nearly 1929 total backlinks. Unfortunately, they are not all good. There are tons of spam sites for our industry that really make it even more competitive. And most of those sites have linked to us and our competitors without permission.
Yeah, I could take the time to notify them and ask to be removed from their pages. But that would occupy a great deal of my time, and most of them would probably not comply anyway. I don't know if it hurts us or not. We seem to come up on the top of page one of another search engine so I'm really hesitant to change things. :)
