I was wondering if it is acceptable to have a website where you have a ton of links at the bottom of the homepage as well as a group of keywords listed at the bottom?

ton of links at the bottom of the homepage To pages on the site or off the site?

as well as a group of keywords listed at the bottom? Some people think that looks "spammy" or like keyword stuffing when there's a bunch of keywords just put in at the bottom.

Marcia,

Thanks for replying..I agree it looks spammy but does it help in search engine ranking or will it hurt it?

A ton of links looks like an excessive number to me. Keywords, unless they serve a purpose to your human visitors, should not be there.

does it help in search engine ranking or will it hurt it?Just my opinion and I'm sure others may think otherwise, but I think having a ton of keywords at the bottom can dilute what the meaning of the page is.

Pages aren't optimized for a ton of keywords each, and it seems more user-friendly and relevant to just use the keywords applicable to the particular page towards the bottom in a paragraph or sentence so it makes sense for visitors and search engines.

That said, I've seen some sites doing very well that did have keywords at the bottom - but not a ton, and used in sentence form.

SEOcort, what i want to say is : there is a fine line between inpage and off-page optimization.

Altough you can stuff 4 A4 pages of keywords and keyphrases in a page, someone else with 10 words on another page can outrank you.

This is because inpage optimization works great until a certain number of SE results like in millions.

For tens or hundreds or thousands of result, so high competing terms, you can only reach your intended position, trough IBLs, internal link structure and other stuff.

As for your footer links or stuffed words, what about quality ? What about your visitors ? And what about a usability ?

Just try and design a good site, a unique content, and users and links will come naturally.

I doubt that Google itself will penalise you for that footer content, unless someone reports you.

But still, is that the way you would go ?

Expert, I definately see your point....I have seen sites like those and I think it looks awful...you are definately right about quality and usability. I think I will focus more on the right amount of keywords and making sure it flows properly and is relevant. I will also work on my link building even though I am lost on that subject as well. If anyone knows any good articles please let me know.
Thank you so much for your advice and thank you to everyone who responded. I am new to SEO and I will need all the help I can get!
