Keyword Density - together or spread out?

I was wondering how keyword density works....are keywords more effective when you have them close together in a sentence or spread out?

Density is the ratio of keywords to overall all words on the page. Proximity has to do with how close the words are together. And yes, the closer together the better. If you target "sports cars" you want the sport to be next to the car.
