We're trying to build a spreadsheet that helps us estimate traffic by metro regions in the US as we develop a feasibility study for a client.

First, though, we want to check our methodology for building state data with the huge crowd of extremely smart SEOers on SEW.

Starting with data from Overture, keyword discovery, and wordtracker, we come up with an integer for a given term per month.

[overture, keyword discovery, wordtracker] = n monthly searches for term t.

...now, in an attempt to break it down by area, one approach is to utilize simple linear percentages factored by internet penetration, as such:

California 35,484,453 12.03% of entire US
Texas 22,118,509 7.50% "
New York 19,190,115 6.51% "
Florida 17,019,068 5.77% "
.....

For each state, we are using factors for internet penetration, rural population factors, product appropriateness, and relative wealth. We're making some assumptions on traffic coming in via PPC and organically, as well, then calculate some conversion estimates.

So, with each state's estimates in hand, we'd like to do some cross checking... Does anyone have any alternative methods they've used (perhaps tools) that can be used to get these numbers?

All the best,

Scott

This site (http://www.ip2location.biz/) offers a great tool, allowing you to know precisely from where your visitors are coming, rather than having to base it on conjecture. The service works by comparing the ip address to those of other well-known ip addresses whose geographic location is known.

There are a number of other geolocation solutions as well. Google geolocation, and you should come up with a few.

Thanks, but we're doing projections, not measurements.
