With all the silliness in other threads, I thought it might be nice to lighten the tone, please vote and comment ;-)
FWIW, my hat is GREY, but that's just because it's old, it used to be BLACK, and one day, if it lasts long enough, it'll be WHITE hehe...

something tells me that even though this thread may have a light happy fun tone to it somehow by the end of the second page it will not.
I will post no more to this particular thread (at least I remember not to) so that my actions do not somehow help shape a self fullfilling prophecy

No hat, just wind in my hair, that's all I need.
I dont wear hats in these types of threads. I prefer a helmet to protect me from all the apples that might get tossed my way.

My hat says SEOs vs. SEs forever...
When you use SEs like we do don't get to close because you contradict your entire profession :D

why "vs.?" can't we all just get along?

Thats a good one...
I think that is a question that only a non-SEO would ask.

Ain't no such thing.

really though... isn't it up to us to help the SE's ensure that good content is available to searchers? why else would they throw parties for us at SES conferences? :D
even some of the black hatters are targeting keywords that apply to their clients' sites, which will make for a positive searcher-experience. The problem is that they are attempoting to influence the SE's, not the searchers.
If the rules are followed, sites will gain inclusion. I have plenty of examples of SEO success without using black hat techniques.

Thats great! Do you any that you would like to share that were targeted for any compeditive terms?
I think any SEO has lots of examples of success with non-compeditive keywords.

The worse thing to happen to the SEO profession is the influx of money and big business with the rise of SEM. Back in the day we were all wearing black, today you are more likely to find capped teeth, pressed suits, ans slick tongues.

Thing that gets to me the most is what has happen to some as they chased the green and started to pretend they are something they aren't. There's not much worse than seeing someone you use to respect get completely out of touch while pasting a fake smile and laugh.
In a way we are all hypocrites but some take it too far, that's where all this 'hat' business started.

ok lotso, how about "oriental rugs?" we did SEO work for the site [url]and have had moderate success for that term in Google and Yahoo. This term has 925K competing sites, so that's OK...No black-hatting, just SEO.
When we get clients, we like to use the Wordtracker tool in helping to determine the value of particular keywords. Many of those end up being the less competitive ones, and as you pointed out, less competitive keywords are easier. that doesn't mean that the process won't work for the more competitive ones, though...

Here is a little chart that might explain what you are talking about
http://www.seo-max.com/images/critical-mass-pyramid.jpg
You say you're not getting a ton of traffic from competative words but you are bringing in the traffic from the more general words. Am I right?

A <strong> within an <H1>, looks sort of 'black hat' to me. ;)

nice chart...very appropriate. I remember one of the panels at SES San Jose mentioned the trend towards higher numbers of keywords in the searches, and this fits nicely with that. Sure people want to get ranked for "real estate," but unless they can provide it worldwide, they are likely not going to meet location criteria. The more specific the term, the better it is to be optimized for it.
this brings up what I call a "super keyword." One example is the "hillsborough county Florida real estate." This KW encompasses not just one, but a few kw's: hillsborough real estate, florida real estate, hillsborough county florida, hillsborough florida and the whole thing. crawlers will be able to display this text within the "description" on the search result and simply bolden the actually searched term.

why is using H1's through h6's considered "black hat?" are these not ways to prioritize content based on subject and title? is that not within the guidelines? maybe I do have a little balck hat in me if not :p

<H1><strong>Alex Cooper Oriental Rugs Online<br>- Your source for Area Rugs</strong></H1>
You most assuredly do have some black hat in you! ;)
There's no purpose for that other than for the SE's.

A <br> in an H1 is unforgivable, imho.

Actually I rather approve of the break ;-)
A 'tedster tip' I've used many times, it works nicely with long titles...

I think all the white hats are being sold seven sizes too big and are covering the wearer's eyes. They never seem to be able to see their own spam.

Chris Boggs, Nice site.
I guess my writing style always seems to piss people off, not what I intended. I just wanted to make the point that top positions for highly competitive terms are not gotten by good copy or good content alone.
You must do things to get those positions that some of the SEs would rather you not do.
It is all just a matter of degrees. I guess nesting a <B> or <strong> inside a <H> could be considered SE spam by some, but in the big scheme of things how bad is it really?
I personally think using a <B> or <Strong> nested in a <H> is far more risky, in terms of being penalized, than using a good IP cloaking script.

thanks for the varied opinions of the H and the the BR. I am still somewhat of a novice at figuring out what is black hat and white hat in terms of HTML. I have always ensured to stay away from stupid old tricks such as white on white and other methods of keyword stuffing, but I thank everyone in here for the HTML info.
Matter of fact... who knows where there is a good article that briefly explains HTML Header use? A Cliff's Notes of sorts? I know someone will recommend HTML for Dummies...

I think it's not so much a question of hats. I wear whatever hat gets me in - but, I have a black belt! It's all about the belt - not the hat. How well do you fight if you have to?
So, yearh, I wear the gray hat most of the time. Sometimes I put on a nice white one, but always keep my black belt ready :D
