Relative newbie here...what suggestions can anyone offer to getting high traffic to my site quickly (a week or two)? Is paid advertisement going to be the only way, or is there another more efficient way?

Paid traffic is an extremely fast way to get traffic to yoru site. If you need it that fast, that'd be the way I'd go. Keep in mind, this will not help your organic ranking...it takes a little longer to get that up.) You are asking two questions: your header says you want 'ranking', but the body of your post says 'traffic'.

Paid traffic, if you bid on 3 and 4 word phrases aren't too expensive either. If you do it, you want to create your own landing page for each 'bucket' of related terms. And, the page you create needs to make people want to covert quickly.

Example: if you are selling cucumbers on the web and you bid for 'buy fresh cucumbers' you want to send people to a page with a picture of cucumbers next to a 'buy now' button and a nice description talking about how fresh your cucumbers are and that you can ship them quickly so they will be fresh when people get them sent to them. Consider also telling the consumer what the shipping price will be if it is possible.

Do not just send people to the home page. You want to send peopel the the page that will make them convert to a buyer SPECIFIC to that phrase.

In the long run, you want to build links and content for your site. But you said you wanted fast traffic, so that is for another thread. :)

You coudl also send out a newsletter type e-mailer to your customers with a link to your site.

And, never forget...Traffic doesn't mean anything if it doesn't convert into a sale or money in your pocket. Either now or in the long run. (I could run a spider on yoru site and give you traffic...but it wouldnt' do much good...)

some advice on getting cheap traffic that converts: ppc is great, but it has a learning curve to it. If you can buy some links or adverts on a popular site that is related to your topic, the traffic is much more valuable.

Look for sites that attract the kind of people you want to draw to your site, people who are interested in your product/service. These kinds of links are often cheaper than ppc.
